Game Industry Hardship Fund Hits $250K Mark to Aid Laid-Off Developers
A charity bundle aimed at helping laid-off game developers has met its early fundraising milestone, even after the goal was raised to $250,000. The Game Industry Hardship Fund, organized by Necrosoft Games together with the United Videogame Workers (UVW-CWA), has already collected more than $252,000 from nearly 18.6 thousand contributors, with the biggest single donation coming in at $5,000.
The effort is part of a wider response to continuing layoffs across the industry, a trend that has not eased as the year moves forward. Some projections suggest that by the end of December, the number of developers being laid off could surpass 14,000—up from 9,200 last year. The scale of the problem has also been stark in recent history, with 2023 seeing more than 15,600 people lose their jobs in games.
To generate direct financial support, Necrosoft Games and UVW-CWA created the Game Industry Hardship Fund bundle on itch.io. The pack is priced at $10 for the set of 127 games, but buyers can pay more if they choose. The fundraising target was originally set at $200,000, with all proceeds directed to hardship support for American developers affected by layoffs.
At the time of reporting, fundraising had reached beyond $119,000, and donors have varied widely in size. The largest contribution was $2,000, while the average spend across 8,568 purchases came to $13.90—showing how many players participated, even when most payments were above the $10 entry price.
The organizers framed the need as urgent both for unemployed creators and for those finding themselves pushed into roles below their qualifications. They also pointed to reports that over the last two years, 33% of the industry’s workforce has been laid off, while positions that those workers could have filled are disappearing. The stated reason is that some leadership groups are attempting to replace human roles with artificial intelligence, making it harder for companies to adapt and, in turn, harder for affected workers to find new employment.
In their statement, Necrosoft Games and UVW-CWA referenced recent large-scale layoffs at major companies, including Ubisoft and Microsoft, which reportedly left thousands of developers without work—many with more than 20 years of experience.
Beyond the bundle’s availability, the fund is designed specifically for individuals rather than studios. Unemployed developers or workers employed below their qualifications who focus on game creation can apply for help, with support intended for essentials such as food, healthcare, and rent.
The pack itself remains somewhat of a grab bag: the collection includes a wide range of smaller, unusual titles, and the organizers noted that the combined standard cost of the full lineup is around $1,018. According to the bundle details, the Game Industry Hardship Fund will stay available for 10 days.
