FIFA bans Egypt trio after Argentina World Cup defeat
Egypt will begin its next international cycle without head coach Hossam Hassan, team manager Ibrahim Hassan and attacker Mostafa Zico after FIFA imposed suspensions arising from the fallout of the 2026 World Cup last-16 defeat by Argentina.
Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan have each received three-match bans, while Zico has been suspended for five internationals. The punishments follow Egypt’s 3-2 loss to Argentina, a match in which the Pharaohs surrendered a two-goal advantage before being eliminated from the tournament.
The immediate consequence is that both Hassan brothers will miss next month’s two Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Malawi. They will also be unavailable for Egypt’s March 2027 qualifier against Angola, leaving the Egyptian Football Association to make arrangements for the technical area during a significant stage of the road to AFCON 2027.
Zico’s longer suspension is set to keep him out until June 2027. He is therefore due to miss Egypt’s four remaining AFCON qualifying matches as well as one further international, depriving the side of a regular starter during the campaign.
World Cup comments led to disciplinary action
The FIFA case centred on comments and conduct surrounding the Argentina match. Before the game, Hossam Hassan made political remarks and questioned whether Argentina, as reigning world champions, had received favourable treatment for commercial reasons. He also argued that fair-play principles had not been upheld and suggested outside influences had affected the result.
After the defeat, Egypt’s anger towards the officiating continued. Zico described the competition as fixed and said the officials had deliberately undermined the efforts of the Egyptian team and its supporters. Hossam Hassan was also cited for confrontational gestures towards the referee, including displaying a “no to racism” message.
The Egyptian Football Association had submitted legal explanations in defence of the three men, but the FIFA Disciplinary Committee concluded that the statements and behaviour merited the respective bans.
Egypt’s federation has accepted notification of the verdicts but is considering an appeal. It has requested FIFA’s full written reasoning so it can assess its legal options and determine whether to challenge the sanctions under the applicable regulations.
The ruling comes shortly after the EFA approved an extension to Hossam Hassan’s contract that runs through the 2030 World Cup, ensuring that the coach remains central to Egypt’s longer-term plans despite his absence from the next three competitive fixtures.
