Emile Heskey Sets Köln Targets for Son Reigan After Man City Exit
Reigan Heskey is targeting a breakthrough season at Köln after leaving Manchester City in the summer of 2026, with his father Emile setting a clear first-year benchmark of 15 to 20 appearances and between 10 and 15 goal contributions.
A measured start in Germany
The teenage forward joined Köln in a deal that could rise to £7 million ($9m) after finding his route to regular senior football at City restricted by established international players, particularly in the left-sided attacking role he wants to occupy.
His introduction has been gradual. Heskey has made one substitute appearance so far, playing 15 minutes, as he adjusts to a new league, country and language. Emile Heskey said his son is enjoying the experience despite the challenges of being in and out of the side.
“He is loving it at the moment,” the former England striker said. “It is difficult because he is moving in and out of the team, and he has a new language to learn and a different country to adapt to. But he is enjoying that as well.”
Reigan remains involved with England’s under-19 set-up, offering him familiar company during international windows. Emile believes the next step is to establish a stronger claim for Köln’s first team.
“He is still young and in the squad,” he said. “But he has to begin making his case for first-team football. If he does, there is no limit to where he can go. He is not far from my size and has plenty of physical development still ahead of him.”
From City academy to Köln opportunity
Heskey emerged through Manchester City’s academy, having impressed England at under-17 and under-18 level and featured at a World Cup tournament in 2025. He made his competitive City debut in the Carabao Cup against Huddersfield in September 2025, appearing alongside his brother Jaden.
Pace, strength and finishing have been identified as central parts of his game, traits associated with his father’s long professional career. Emile Heskey won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup during spells with Leicester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa, while collecting 62 England caps.
- Reigan Heskey represented England at under-17 and under-18 level, including a World Cup tournament in 2025.
- He and brother Jaden made their senior Manchester City debuts against Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup in September 2025.
- Köln agreed a package worth up to £7 million ($9m) for his transfer in summer 2026.
- His first Köln appearance came from the bench, with 15 minutes played.
- The immediate target is a sustained run of first-team involvement across his debut campaign.
Minutes, output and development
For Emile Heskey, the key measure of progress is not an instant starting place but a meaningful body of senior minutes. He believes 15 to 20 matches would represent a successful first season, with 10 to 15 direct goal involvements an encouraging return.
The former striker has previously argued that young English players should not have to leave the country to access senior football. He cited Germany, Belgium and France as leagues where pathways have opened more readily for emerging talent, while noting that English clubs often recruit overseas players at 20 or 21 despite England producing strong youth international sides.
He pointed to Marc Guéhi’s departure from Chelsea before establishing himself at Crystal Palace as an example of a player needing to move for opportunity. Heskey also referenced the generation featuring Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden, which was regarded as one of Europe’s strongest at youth level.
His concern is that players can lose essential developmental seasons between the ages of 18 and 20 when they remain in under-21 football. While he values the EFL Trophy, he views it as too limited by itself to replace a regular senior programme. Emile left Leicester for Liverpool at 22 after five seasons with the Foxes, and sees the current route as more obstructed for many academy graduates.
- Heskey is being integrated carefully at Köln after his summer move from Manchester City.
- His father’s target is 15 to 20 appearances, plus 10 to 15 goal contributions.
- England under-19 involvement gives the forward continued international exposure while he settles abroad.
- The longer-term ambition is to secure a permanent club role and eventually push towards senior England selection.
England context and coaching work
Emile Heskey has also been working with the Chase football coaching programme at St George’s Park, following England’s run to the 2026 World Cup semi-finals. The initiative provides fully funded introductory coaching qualifications and professional coaching bursaries for people from low-income backgrounds across the UK.
England, now led by German head coach Thomas Tuchel, return to action in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League after a 7-0 win over Croatia. Their next fixture is a home match against Czechia on Tuesday.
For Reigan Heskey, however, the immediate priority is Köln: adapting quickly, converting brief opportunities into a regular role and building the senior experience that could make his international ambitions realistic.
