Diomande Fires Real Madrid Past Villarreal Despite Vinicius Red Card
Real Madrid held on for a hard-earned 1-0 win over Villarreal at the Estadio Bernabeu after a second-half goal from Diomande and a late spell spent defending with ten players. José Mourinho’s side were unable to find a way through Villarreal before the break, but Diomande punished a lapse in concentration on 62 minutes before the match became increasingly fraught.
Madrid had 47 per cent of the ball in a tightly contested first half, yet neither team created the opening required to unsettle the scoreline. Villarreal’s compact defensive block restricted the home side’s ability to use the wide areas and left Kylian Mbappé short of the space he needed behind the visitors’ defence.
Diomande supplied the breakthrough after the interval, arriving to finish decisively following Villarreal’s momentary loss of focus. His influence extended beyond the goal: he pressed aggressively, moved intelligently around the final third and linked play calmly before being withdrawn in the 86th minute to a standing ovation.
The contest changed again when Vinicius was sent off midway through the second half. The dismissal was recorded in the 72nd minute, with the forward’s appearance having begun in the 52nd minute, and left Madrid facing sustained pressure through the final quarter. Villarreal sent aerial balls into the area in search of an equaliser, but Madrid’s Belgian goalkeeper made four saves and commanded his box effectively to protect the clean sheet.
Antonio Rudiger was central to the resistance, producing important clearances and dealing firmly with the threat posed by Ayoze Pérez. His fellow centre-back provided recovery pace against Villarreal’s counter-attacks and stood up well in one-on-one situations, while Aurélien Tchouaméni’s screening role became especially important after the red card. Tchouaméni was booked in the 87th minute, and Mbappé received a stoppage-time caution for a foul as tension rose during the closing stages.
Madrid’s captain brought energy and running power to a side that had lacked momentum before half-time, playing a key part in the transition that led to Diomande’s goal. Another midfielder worked diligently between Villarreal’s lines despite being crowded out by the visitors’ double pivot, while the creative link player was replaced by Eduardo Camavinga in the 78th minute as Mourinho sought greater security in midfield. Camavinga helped the hosts keep possession under pressure after coming on.
Mourinho had already reshaped his left flank at the interval, replacing Carreras, whose defensive positioning had been tested by Akhomach and whose attacking contribution had been limited. Cucurella’s introduction brought greater tenacity and stability, while an earlier defensive player had made way early in the second half as the tactical demands altered.
Mbappé endured a difficult evening against Villarreal’s deep line, finding few opportunities to run in behind despite his attempts to connect Madrid’s midfield with the attack. Diomande’s late replacement was also used to reinforce the team’s efforts to close out the game.
It was ultimately a result built on resilience rather than fluency. Mourinho’s half-time adjustment helped Madrid regain control of their defensive shape, and his side showed the necessary discipline to protect their narrow advantage after Vinicius’s dismissal.
