Cristiano Ronaldo Closes In on 1,000 Career Goals with Portugal and Al-Nassr
Cristiano Ronaldo is 21 goals from becoming the first player to reach 1,000 senior career goals, with the Portugal captain currently on 979 as he approaches his 41st birthday year. The Al-Nassr forward has already passed the 900-goal threshold and remains in contention to add to his total during Portugal’s Nations League programme.
Ronaldo has scored three times in seven Al-Nassr appearances in all competitions this season. His next opportunity comes when Portugal meet Norway today in League A Group 4, following Thursday’s 1-0 opening win in which João Félix supplied the decisive goal.
Félix targets landmark Ronaldo assist
Félix has set himself a personal target of creating Ronaldo’s historic 1,000th goal. The pair have spent considerable time together with Portugal, while they are also teammates at Al-Nassr.
“I want to provide Cristiano’s assist for goal number 1,000,” Félix said, outlining the part he hopes to play as Ronaldo closes in on the landmark.
Portugal will remain on Nations League duty after the Norway match, travelling to Denmark on October 1 before facing Norway again on October 4.
Al-Nassr form and Portugal reflection
Félix has been a major figure since joining Al-Nassr in the summer of 2025. The former Atlético Madrid attacker was named the leading player in the club’s recent league-title success and has recorded 30 goals and 22 assists across 55 matches in all competitions.
The 26-year-old believes his game has developed substantially during his time in Saudi Arabia. He said he now feels more complete, with a stronger understanding of matches and their different phases than he had at 20 or 21. His recent goal against Wales has underlined that positive form.
Félix also addressed Portugal’s round-of-16 exit at the recent World Cup, when they lost 1-0 to Spain. While accepting that the squad had hoped to progress further, he rejected the idea that the tournament should be viewed as a complete failure, noting that Spain were the competition’s strongest side and that Portugal had been close before conceding the deciding goal.
