Crimson Desert Guide: Where to Find Skevald the Carrion King
Skevald the Carrion King is one of the more demanding Legendary Animal encounters in Crimson Desert, and it’s tied to a questline that can open up new trade routes. If you’re planning to hunt it down, here’s where it shows up, how its patrol works, what to bring, and what rewards you can expect after the fight.
Crimson Desert hunt details: where to find Skevald and what you get
| Task / Location | Reward |
|---|---|
| Hyena Den, east of Tommaso (start of its patrol loop) | Putrid Touch Abyss Gear, Hyena Mask |
Skevald the Carrion King is an untracked Legendary Animal and part of a questline in Crimson Desert that starts in the city of Tommaso. The fight takes place in the den area just outside the city, where Skevald—described as a large hyena—leads a sizable pack. With the creature threatening the area, the people of Tommaso have posted a bounty notice to defeat it, aiming to clear the way for additional trade routes.
If you don’t want to begin the quest “Village in Fear” the usual way, you can still tackle Skevald at any point during your exploration. That quest is found by checking posts around Tommaso, but Skevald can be encountered in the open wastes without starting the quest first—just be ready for a serious challenge.
Expect Skevald to be extremely tough. To avoid getting overwhelmed, you’ll want mid- to late-game gear and a healthy supply of healing items before engaging. Going in underprepared is a quick way to get punished by the pack and the boss’s toxic attacks.
Unlike enemies that stay in a single room, Skevald doesn’t live at one fixed spot. Instead, it patrols a large route. The loop starts at the big Hyena Den, then runs southeast across the road toward the Desert Ruins, before circling back north along the upper side and returning toward the den. In practice, you can track its movement by watching for the large band of hyenas that follow Skevald during the patrol.
That sizable hyena group can make the encounter awkward if you can’t remove smaller threats quickly. If you’re struggling to thin the herd, consider using Axiom or elemental skills to control the fight, and explosives like explosive arrows to clear out lesser enemies faster. Weapon arts that can cleave through multiple hyenas at once are also a good option, since they help you survive the swarm while you wait for Skevald to fully commit to an attack.
In combat, Skevald plays as a fast, aggressive brute packed with toxic power. The creature frequently sprays poison clouds during dashes or pounces, turning positioning into a constant problem. Its lunge is especially dangerous: it can knock you down and remove a large chunk of your health in one go. Since toxic damage stacks the pressure, keep monitoring your status and react quickly—getting caught before you can respond is how this fight ends early.
Once you take down one health bar, Skevald will abruptly disappear and the objective to kill it will update. At that point, you’ll need to locate it again. The game prompts you to use your lantern to track Skevald’s movement. Even though the tracker marks the Hyena Den on your map, Skevald won’t actually be waiting there; it continues returning to its patrol route. Keep circling along the loop until you spot it a second time.
After you finally defeat Skevald, the rest of the hyenas in the nearby area will flee. You’ll also receive Abyss Gear that allows you to deal the same toxic damage that Skevald used against you. Finally, don’t skip the final step: return to Tommaso to complete the quest and claim the Hyena Helm as well.
