Coventry City Hammer Newcastle 4-0 to Escape Relegation Zone
Coventry City climbed out of the relegation zone after sweeping aside Newcastle in a 4-0 home victory, with Frank Lampard hailing a complete display built on energy, resilience and clinical finishing.
Jack Rudoni put the Sky Blues ahead from the penalty spot after teenage forward Sidiki Cherif won the foul. Cherif then marked his first top-flight start with Coventry’s second before Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni completed an emphatic result.
The win moved Coventry level on points with Manchester United and gave the home supporters a landmark afternoon, although Lampard urged his players not to lose perspective as the season develops.
Lampard delighted by Coventry’s response
Lampard said victories remain difficult to earn and felt his side had produced the kind of performance he wants to see consistently. He praised the spirit within the squad, their willingness to work through difficult periods and the quality shown when chances arrived.
The Coventry manager said the team had not always received the small moments of fortune needed to turn performances into points earlier in the campaign. Against Newcastle, however, he believed the finishing reflected what the players had earned through their work over the full 90 minutes.
While delighted that the players could enjoy the result, Lampard stressed that Coventry must remain grounded. A demanding sequence of fixtures awaits as they look to establish a safer position away from the bottom three.
Cherif’s first start brings goal and praise
Cherif was central to the breakthrough, winning the early penalty before scoring himself. Lampard described the youngster as an exciting prospect with a strong attitude towards training and development.
The manager noted that Cherif is naturally quiet but showed character in the match, particularly through his running and work without the ball. Lampard believes there is considerable further development to come from the teenage forward.
Mfuni’s goal also underlined the contribution of Coventry’s younger players, but Lampard will need to manage his squad carefully through the coming run and into the next international break. Maintaining the form and freshness of Cherif, Mfuni and the wider group will be important if Coventry are to build on their Newcastle result.
