Citadel Fourth Estate Guide: Interview Choices That Change Paragon/Renegade
The Citadel: The Fourth Estate assignment is one of Mass Effect’s most notorious missions on the galactic hub, and it’s packed with dialogue checks that affect your Paragon/Renegade standings—mostly through how you handle a reporter interview. Here’s a clean walkthrough of what the task asks for, where you go, and which choices matter (and which ones don’t) so you can plan your run.

Travel to Widow
- Prerequisite: Finish either Therum, Feros, or Noveria.
- Location: Serpent Nebula – Widow – The Citadel – C-Sec Academy
Despite its reputation, this assignment is straightforward in terms of location: it takes place on the Citadel. The Citadel is the main galactic hub sitting in the Serpent Nebula—the only cluster on the western side of the Milky Way. This same hub is where you complete the mission “Citadel: Expose Saren.” In terms of map scope, it has just a single system (Widow) and no discoveries to hunt down.
Meet Al-Jilani
Reporter Khalisa Bint Sinan Al-Jilani has set up shop at the bottom of the Docking Bay 422 elevator. That means she’ll likely be the second thing you encounter when you return to the Citadel—after “Citadel: Snap Inspection.” She quickly requests an interview, and while it’s described as having no practical consequences beyond perception, it still shapes how the Alliance, Shepard, and the Citadel Council are portrayed.
If you want to refuse the interview, choose “Go away,” then “I say get stuffed.” Doing so ends the assignment, but you’ll gain absolutely no rewards.
Even though some dialogue options appear as Persuasion choices, the first two questions you’re asked are effectively non-influential for your Morality outcomes. The meaningful part starts at the third and fourth questions, where the conversation focuses on the Normandy’s design and whether it should have been handed over to the Citadel once Shepard was officially made a Spectre.
What you choose here becomes the subject of your later discussion with Admiral Hackett when you open the Galaxy Map again. With two exceptions, that later topic is what determines which Paragon or Renegade Morality Points you receive.
Here’s the breakdown:
- If you choose “This interview is over” at any point, Shepard will clock Al-Jilani’s angle and end the interview immediately. You’ll walk away with +2 Paragon Points, and Hackett will understand later.
- If you choose “Time to shut you up!” at any point, Shepard will respond with anger by punching Al-Jilani, cutting the interview short for +2 Renegade Points—and you’ll also trigger Hackett’s disapproval.
- Picking the dialogue wheel options positioned in the middle-right area causes Shepard to deliver non-answers.
- If you select “That’s only a formality” when asked whether the Normandy should have been transferred to the Council, you’ll be prompted with a follow-up question about whether humanity is respected by the broader galactic community.
- If you have 6 Charm, select at least two Charm options from the upper-left portion of the dialogue wheel to receive a favorable response from Hackett later.
- If you have 5 Intimidate, select at least two Intimidate options from the lower-left portion of the dialogue wheel to get a response from Hackett that disagrees but still shows understanding.
- If you select “That’s only a formality” when asked whether the Normandy should have been transferred to the Council, you’ll receive an additional question about whether humanity will be respected by the galactic community.
The fifth question of the interview is also important. Al-Jilani asks you to comment on rumors that Shepard is tracking Saren. Your options determine how the Council reacts—and that can affect your Hackett reward pool.
- If you pick “He was behind Eden Prime” or “The Council protected him,” you’ll offend the Council for discussing Saren.
- If you pick “I can’t confirm or deny that,” your neutral response won’t upset the Council.
- If you pick “This interview is over” or “Time to shut you up!” then Al-Jilani’s handling of the Saren rumors becomes the focus of your conversation with Hackett no matter what you answered earlier. This can prevent you from unlocking certain Morality Point rewards.
Talk with Admiral Hackett
After the interview ends, the mission may be marked complete—but you still have one more step if you want your Morality Points. When you head back to the Normandy and open the Galaxy Map, Admiral Hackett contacts you. He has just seen Al-Jilani’s story about Shepard. In this moment, you can react however you want because none of your responses here directly award Morality Points.
Instead, the Morality Points you earn from the Hackett call are tied to the main thread of the topic he brings up. That’s also why choosing either interview-ending option can override the other reward paths—if you selected it on the final Saren-related question.
Hackett’s possible discussion topics depend on what you did after the two opening questions:
- If you selected at least two Charm options, Hackett will focus on how you presented yourself well and made Al-Jilani look foolish, granting +8 Paragon Points.
- If you selected at least two Intimidate options, he’ll focus on how, even if your opinion was questionable, you handled her questions with skill—earning +9 Renegade Points.
- If your choices included a mix of Charm and Intimidate, the topic will still be about dodging her questions generally, but you won’t receive any Morality Points.
- If you picked at least two non-committal responses from the middle-right side of the dialogue wheel, Hackett will note that Al-Jilani made Shepard look foolish during the interview, and you’ll receive no Morality Points.
- If you chose “This interview is over” at any time, Hackett will understand why Shepard decided to leave the interview.
- If you chose “Time to shut you up!” at any time, Hackett will tell Shepard that Alliance leadership is very upset about you punching out Al-Jilani. In that case, you’ll get no additional Morality Points, since you already received the +2 Renegade Points from the punch earlier.
One more detail: if, on the Saren question, you answered either “He was behind Eden Prime” or “The Council protected him,” Hackett will also mention that the Council isn’t happy you discussed the actions of their Spectre. The guide notes this won’t grant Renegade Points.
If you’re progressing through the guide in order, your next assignment depends on Shepard’s Pre-Service History:
- Spacers should continue with Citadel: Old, Unhappy, Far-Off Things.
- Colonists and Earthborns should continue with UNC: Asari Diplomacy.
