Chelsea to Manage Cole Palmer Fitness After England Squad Withdrawal
Cole Palmer has been withdrawn from England’s opening international squad of the 2026-27 season, with Chelsea set to manage the 24-year-old’s fitness during the break rather than risk a recurrence of the problems that disrupted his previous campaign.

Palmer had returned to form at the beginning of the new season, combining effectively with Chelsea team-mate and England colleague Morgan Rogers. That upturn followed a difficult summer in which he missed out on the Three Lions’ plans for the tournament in North America, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden and Gibbs-White.
His early Chelsea displays had put him back in Thomas Tuchel’s thinking, but an injury concern has ended his involvement before England face Spain, Czechia and Croatia. Palmer is among five omissions from the original 27-player selection and will remain in west London to work under Xabi Alonso.
Gibbs-White has taken Palmer’s place after interrupting a family holiday to join the national set-up. The Nottingham Forest creator now has an unexpected opening to impress Tuchel, who has placed considerable value on a settled group and continuity during the Nations League programme.
Fitness remains the priority
Palmer featured heavily over recent seasons before fitness problems restricted him at stages last term. Chelsea are therefore keen for their No. 10 to be carefully managed, particularly with a long domestic and European schedule still ahead.
Former Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink rejected the suggestion that Palmer’s absence could be a response to his earlier England disappointment. He said the midfielder is focused solely on playing and looking after his body, rather than engaging in any dispute with the England manager.
Hasselbaink said Palmer had played a substantial amount of football in recent years and that this contributed to the injuries he encountered last season. In his view, Palmer wants to ensure that even minor issues are properly treated so he can sustain a strong campaign.
He also stressed that Palmer would not want to report for international duty unless capable of performing at his best. “If he is carrying an injury, that would not help anyone,” Hasselbaink said.
Whether Palmer returns for England’s November fixtures will depend on his club performances and physical condition. Tuchel has a deep pool of attacking midfielders and wide creators available, making training standards and match minutes important for every player seeking a regular place through the Nations League and towards Euro 2028 qualifying.
Palmer’s 2024 England player-of-the-year award underlines his standing when fully fit. If he continues his productive start for Chelsea after the break, he will have a compelling case to regain his place.
