Chelsea Suffer 3-0 Brentford Defeat as Alonso’s Winless Run Continues

Chelsea were beaten 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium as a second-half collapse in the west London derby extended Alonso’s winless Premier League run to three matches. After a scoreless opening period, Jaidon Anthony headed in from a corner before Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho struck on late counter-attacks, leaving Chelsea without a goal for the first time this season.

Set-piece problem returns in costly defeat

Levi Colwill said Chelsea had paid for losing their defensive discipline after falling behind from a corner and then committing too many players forward in pursuit of a response.

The England defender said the first goal had been especially damaging, with Chelsea then exposed as they attempted to force an equaliser. He said the side had played passes they should not have attempted, allowing Brentford to break and add two further goals.

Colwill calls for collective responsibility

Despite the scale of the defeat, Colwill did not believe Chelsea’s belief disappeared after the opener. He said the team continued to press for a leveller, only to be punished by Brentford’s transitions.

The defender also warned that Chelsea cannot expect their attacking players to rescue every difficult situation. He said responsibility must be shared throughout the side, particularly after a second half he described as below the required level.
