Chelsea’s Midfield Shortage Exposed in 3-0 Defeat at Brentford
Chelsea’s 3-0 loss at Brentford has sharpened attention on Xabi Alonso’s shortage of central-midfield options, with the head coach turning to 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli while his side were trying to recover at the Gtech Community Stadium. The defeat also extended Chelsea’s troubling league sequence: they have conceded at least twice in each Premier League fixture this season.

Brentford took control after the interval, and Fabio Carvalho added the hosts’ third goal deep into stoppage time. Yet it was Alonso’s late change, rather than the final score alone, that underlined the scale of the issue facing Chelsea.
Rather than introducing an established option such as Romeo Lavia, Alonso brought academy player Nicoll-Jazuli into midfield as Chelsea chased the contest from two goals down. Former Chelsea winger Cole viewed the substitution as an unmistakable signal to the club’s decision-makers that the coach does not believe he has sufficient senior depth in that area.
Cole said Alonso’s body language at full time suggested deep frustration, arguing that using a 16-year-old in an away game while attempting a comeback was a pointed indication of the squad’s imbalance.
That imbalance followed a summer in which Chelsea lost Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City and Andrey Santos to Manchester United. Their attempt to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara on deadline day also failed at the last stage, leaving Alonso without the reinforcement he had sought.
Former Premier League forward Murray said the transfer-window departures had created an obvious weakness at the centre of the side. He noted that Chelsea have at times had to use full-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto in midfield, even though Brentford saw two recognised central players start: 36-year-old Jordan Henderson alongside summer signing Valentin Barco.
Murray similarly interpreted Nicoll-Jazuli’s appearance as a message from Alonso, particularly after Fernandez and Santos had departed. Chelsea’s lack of continuity has been clear in the early weeks of the campaign, with three different midfield pairings or combinations used across five league matches.
Moises Caicedo’s continuing muscle problem has further reduced Alonso’s room for manoeuvre. Until the Ecuadorian is fit enough to return, Chelsea are likely to remain exposed through the middle, an issue opponents have already found ways to exploit.
