Chelsea Boosted as Moises Caicedo Nears Return for Bournemouth Clash
Chelsea could have Moises Caicedo available again for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, with the midfielder nearing a return after more than a month out with a calf injury.
The 24-year-old has made only one appearance this season. After missing the opening fixtures with a minor fitness issue, he came on against former club Brighton on August 30 but was forced off before the final whistle when the calf problem resurfaced. He has since missed four matches in all competitions and was not used by his national team during the latest international window.
His absence has coincided with a difficult run for Chelsea. The Blues have taken one point from a possible nine without Caicedo and dropped to 10th in the Premier League, despite beginning the campaign among the teams expected to compete near the top of the table.
Midfield balance remains under scrutiny
France World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf believes Chelsea’s assessment of their midfield options must wait until Caicedo is fully fit. The former Blues defender said Caicedo had been more important to the side than Enzo Fernandez, who joined Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
“There is still work to do in midfield and in defence, particularly with Xabi Alonso wanting to use a back three,” Leboeuf said. “At the moment, it is not really functioning. But it is difficult to judge the midfield properly without Caicedo.
“He was the key player for me, even ahead of Enzo Fernandez. Losing him changes the team, as it did when Chelsea sides lost figures such as John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba or Gianfranco Zola.”
Leboeuf said Chelsea have lacked sufficient strength in central areas during Caicedo’s lay-off, but stopped short of demanding another midfield signing. He pointed to Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco and captain Reece James as existing alternatives, while stressing that availability has been the central issue.
“Caicedo can play alongside Lavia or James when he returns,” Leboeuf added. “The difficulty comes when Caicedo is absent and Lavia is injured as well. Caicedo and Fernandez previously gave the team reliability because they could each play around 40 matches in a season.
“I would not make a final call on buying another player until we see the midfield with Caicedo back in it. There are encouraging things in attack, but Chelsea still need to improve in midfield and at the back. The players already there must stay fit.”
Selection solutions have been stretched
Chelsea have had to adapt in Caicedo’s absence, with James and fellow full-back Malo Gusto used in central midfield roles at times. A return for Caicedo would provide greater energy and ball-winning ability in an area that has lacked continuity.
The squad has assembled an imposing attacking group, but defensive problems have continued despite the arrival of Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez. Chelsea will look for a response against Bournemouth as they attempt to halt their slide and restore balance to a side still searching for consistency at both ends of the pitch.
