Carrick Under Pressure as Manchester United Face Leeds at Elland Road
Michael Carrick will take Manchester United to Elland Road on Sunday with his side 13th in the Premier League and without a win in five matches in all competitions, as pressure builds ahead of a meeting with Leeds United.
United have collected six points from their first six league games. Their only victory came against newly promoted Ipswich Town, while their latest outing ended in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur despite Spurs playing with 10 men.
The trip across the Pennines presents a significant opportunity to halt the slide. A defeat, or another unconvincing display against one of the club’s oldest rivals, would deepen the scrutiny surrounding Carrick’s position less than a year after he took charge in January.
Carrick focused on club rather than his position
The 45-year-old said he is not approaching the situation as a fight to protect his own job, insisting the priority is restoring results for United.
“I do not see it as being about me,” Carrick said before the Leeds match. “I am not thinking about how I get through it or what I need to do for myself. That is not what matters. It is about Manchester United and winning games.”
Carrick also rejected comments attributed to former United midfielder Nicky Butt, who claimed the head coach had privately felt management was not suited to him before accepting the role.
He said he would not have accepted the position if that had been his view, describing the United post as the best job available to him. Carrick added that he feels both privileged and responsible to lead the club, and remains motivated by the prospect of making a difference and delivering success.
“I am enjoying it,” he said. “If you are not prepared for difficult moments, you are never going to achieve anything great. We have to come through this, and I am enjoying the process.”
Unrest has added to difficult start
The poor run has arrived amid wider tension at Old Trafford. Lisandro Martinez has publicly criticised director of football Jason Wilcox, creating another issue for Carrick to manage while attempting to improve results on the pitch.
United’s hierarchy continue to view the position as manageable, with the squad understood to remain behind the manager. Nevertheless, Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte have both been linked with the role should the club decide that a change is required.
For now, the immediate task is clear. Three points at Elland Road would ease the pressure and offer United a platform to revive their league campaign. Another setback would bring renewed questions over Carrick’s future and test the board’s willingness to maintain its support.
