Brighton Thrash Pointless Coventry 5-0 as Lampard’s Crisis Deepens
Brighton moved into fourth place after a ruthless 5-0 win over Coventry, with Frank Lampard left facing an urgent task to restore belief in a side still without a point or a goal in the Premier League.
Coventry competed encouragingly before the interval and created periods of pressure, but Brighton went into the break ahead and took complete control after the restart. Lampard had called for calm and conviction at half-time, arguing that his players had grown into the match despite failing to convert their opportunities. He said Coventry needed to retain a positive approach and keep faith in themselves, adding that belief was essential in football.
Instead, the result deepened Coventry’s early-season problems. They are the only team in the division yet to collect a point, while their failure to score places them alongside Tottenham Hotspur as the competition’s only goalless sides. Spurs, however, have taken two points from two draws and two defeats.
Gross reaches Premier League landmark
Pascal Gross was central to Brighton’s dominance, controlling the match and contributing from the penalty spot. His assist for Yasin Ayari’s late goal was his 50th in the Premier League since making his competition debut in 2017-18.
That total puts the German alongside Bernardo Silva on 50 assists. Only Kevin De Bruyne, with 91, and Bruno Fernandes, with 73, have registered more Premier League assists among midfielders during that period.
Brighton’s seven points leave them fourth after the victory, while Coventry must quickly recover from a damaging defeat. Lampard’s side host Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before travelling to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, with a first goal and first point now pressing priorities.
