Coventry City’s Premier League return has begun with four defeats, no goals and no points after Brighton & Hove Albion left with a 5-0 victory, a result that matched the heaviest loss of Frank Lampard’s managerial career.

Lampard identifies decisive second-half moments

Lampard did not single out individuals after the defeat, instead accepting that Brighton’s quality was evident and that the match changed decisively after Coventry’s early second-half errors.

He said his side had made a positive start, but described the concession of the second goal as an error that cannot be made at Premier League level. Coventry had produced some encouraging spells before Awoniyi’s red card, he added, but the task became markedly harder once Brighton had the extra player.

The Coventry manager felt his players continued to work until the final whistle, while acknowledging that the performance underlined the standards his squad must reach. He also praised Brighton’s clinical finishing.

Coventry face quick cup and league tests

Lampard urged his squad not to dwell on the result, noting that their first four league fixtures have included difficult away matches against Arsenal and Manchester City. He said the Premier League brings a higher level of pressure, particularly for players with limited experience at that standard, and insisted that continued work is the only response.

He regarded the earlier defeat to Hull as more disappointing than the Brighton loss, given the visitors’ level and efficiency at Coventry.
