Brighton Hand Arsenal First League Defeat with 3-0 Amex Victory
Arsenal’s perfect start to the season ended with a damaging 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, as the champions conceded three times in one afternoon after allowing only three goals across the rest of the campaign.
Brighton exploit space around Arsenal’s central defence
The match was tight during its opening half-hour at the Amex Stadium, but Brighton took control when Pascal Gross was afforded room on the edge of the penalty area. Gabriel and Ezri Konsa did not get close enough to the German midfielder, whose powerful low strike struck David Raya’s near post before crossing the line.
It was Gross’s fourth goal in five matches and gave Brighton the reward for a composed start. Arsenal then repeated the same defensive error just before the interval. Diego Gómez found Charalampos Kostoulas in space, and the forward drove a low shot through the gap between Arsenal’s centre-backs and into Raya’s bottom-left corner.
Arsenal went into the break two goals down, having been punished for the rare lack of protection in front of their back line.
Andrés seals Brighton’s biggest result of the season
There were early signs that Arsenal might generate a response after the restart, but Brighton’s third goal removed any prospect of a comeback. Gross delivered a corner towards the far post and summer arrival Chema Andrés rose highest to head beyond Raya.
The goal was Andrés’s first at the Amex on his full home debut, while Gross finished the afternoon with a goal and an assist.
Mikel Arteta introduced Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres from the bench in an attempt to change the contest. Kai Havertz had Arsenal’s clearest opportunity to reduce the deficit when he broke through on goal, but Bart Verbruggen saved his low effort with his feet.
