Brighton Hammer Arsenal 3-0 to End Unbeaten Premier League Start

Arsenal arrived on the south coast with nine successive league victories behind them, but struggled to establish control against Brighton’s pressing and physical intensity. The hosts had also carried momentum from recent wins over Coventry City and Manchester United.

Gross put Brighton ahead in the 31st minute, striking from the edge of the penalty area and seeing his effort go in off the post. Arsenal had a chance to respond before the break when Bukayo Saka was presented with an opening after Martin Odegaard’s deflected effort, but could not convert.

Brighton extended their lead moments later. Kostoulas found space in the area and turned the ball home, leaving Arsenal with a two-goal deficit at the interval.

The home side continued to impose themselves after the restart, with Gross again decisive. His corner 12 minutes into the second half was met by Chema Andres, who rose above the Arsenal defence to head in Brighton’s third and settle the contest.

Hurzeler described the result as a special occasion, praising both the calibre of the opposition and the standard set by his players. He said Brighton had made themselves “horrible to play against” and urged the squad to enjoy the moment.

The Brighton manager pointed to intensity, winning individual battles and belief as essential parts of the performance. He also stressed the strength of the group, saying players trusted one another and that replacements could step in when required.

Gross received particular credit after combining a goal with an assist. Hurzeler said the midfielder enjoyed scoring and was a player his team-mates could rely on, adding that he improved those around him.

Brighton’s defensive display was also strengthened by Pascal Struijk, with the summer arrival impressing on his first Premier League start for the club.

Despite the scale of the victory, Hurzeler called for restraint ahead of a demanding schedule following the international break. Brighton, he said, must remain humble, understand the reasons for the win and continue to approach the campaign one match at a time.
