Brentford Rout Chelsea 3-0 to Expose Xabi Alonso’s Fragile Side
Brentford delivered a 3-0 win over Chelsea on Friday, exposing familiar frailties in Xabi Alonso’s side as the first match of Clearlake Capital’s full control of the club ended in a damaging defeat.
Chelsea had stayed in the contest for roughly 70 minutes, with Jordan Henderson and Valentín Barco offering protection ahead of the defence in a low-chance opening. But Brentford’s greater cohesion told once the game opened up, with the home side punishing poor marking and the spaces left by their visitors.
The result was particularly frustrating for Chelsea after a summer intended to add experience and structure to Alonso’s squad. Henderson arrived in midfield and Danny Welbeck was signed to lead the line, but the visitors again looked vulnerable when the match turned against them.
Brentford strike three times late
The breakthrough came from a Mikkel Damsgaard corner. Jannik Schuster headed the delivery back across goal and Jaidon Anthony, left free at the far post, nodded in.
Brentford’s second followed a Chelsea attack that left the back line exposed. Kevin Schade escaped on the counter and saw his effort saved, but Igor Thiago reacted quickest to convert the loose ball with an acrobatic finish.
Fábio Carvalho completed the scoring at the far post, again without a Chelsea defender close enough to prevent the finish. Head coach Keith Andrews celebrated with his staff as the home supporters sang about wanting to face Chelsea every week.
Chelsea missed João Pedro, whose absence deprived Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer of the central forward who has helped their attack click this season. Welbeck was unable to establish the same connection with the pair.
Settled Brentford continue unbeaten start
Brentford entered the fixture unbeaten, having recorded one victory and three draws, and their display reinforced the confidence around the club following another productive transfer window.
Mamadou Sangare arrived from Lens during the summer, adding to a squad that has repeatedly replaced departing players through recruitment and internal development. Brentford have continued to progress despite losing high-profile performers in recent years, including Bryan Mbeumo.
Andrews, promoted from his role as set-piece coach after Thomas Frank left last year, has also maintained the club’s direction. Before the Chelsea match, Schade and Vitaly Janelt had been included by Jürgen Klopp in a 44-player Germany squad, while captain Nathan Collins donated £1,000 to supporters’ group TW8 Casuals for flags and other matchday displays.
Andrews said the players are regularly reminded how fortunate they are to work in an environment he described as special, with that message displayed above the boot room.
Since reaching the Premier League in 2021, Brentford have largely sustained a clear model despite player and managerial changes. Friday’s result showed the value of that continuity, while Chelsea remain a side still searching for consistency and a settled identity under Alonso.
