Bremer Targets Europa League Glory as Juventus Face NEC Nijmegen

Gleison Bremer has set Juventus an ambitious target ahead of their UEFA Europa League opening match against NEC Nijmegen, with the captain determined to begin the campaign at the Allianz Stadium with a home victory and pursue the trophy.

The Brazilian centre-back, 29, will lead Luciano Spalletti’s side into the competition against the Dutch visitors as Juventus seek an early indication of their European credentials. Bremer said the squad have the quality to contend through to the latter stages and made clear that lifting the Europa League is the objective.

For Bremer, the captaincy also carries the weight of Juventus’s defensive history. He pointed to Gaetano Scirea as one of the club’s defining former defenders, while stressing that he does not intend to measure himself directly against such figures.

“There have been so many great defenders at this club, particularly Gaetano Scirea,” Bremer said. “Comparing myself with them would bring enormous pressure, but I want to create my own place in Juventus history and I will always give everything on the field.”

Bremer believes his combative approach, strength in physical duels and ability in the air can be important assets for the Bianconeri. His immediate focus is to help establish a solid platform as Juventus start their group-stage schedule at home.

Confidence in Spalletti’s direction

The defender also credited Spalletti with giving the side a clearer framework and accelerating its progress. Bremer said the coach’s work on the training ground has helped the players develop individually as well as collectively.

“He has given us a direction and put us on the right route,” Bremer said. “We have improved a great deal under him. He is an outstanding coach, a winner, and every day he is helping us move towards our aims.”

Juventus now have the chance to turn that confidence into an opening three points against NEC. A win in Turin would give Spalletti’s team the start Bremer wants as they attempt to make their mark in Europe this season.
