Bompastor Returns to Lyon as Chelsea Target Victory

Sonia Bompastor will return to Lyon on Wednesday with Chelsea, but the emotional pull of a former club will not alter her objective: to take three points in a major Women’s Champions League test at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

A return shaped by a long Lyon career

Bompastor’s connection with Lyon extends across several roles. She played for the French club, spent eight years as academy director and later delivered major honours as head coach before taking charge of Chelsea.

She accepted that the occasion will carry personal significance, particularly in a stadium familiar to several members of Chelsea’s travelling group and staff. However, the Chelsea manager said the preparation of her side must remain the priority.

“It will clearly be emotional,” Bompastor said. “There are a number of people in the staff and squad who have played or coached here. But there is a game to play, and that is what matters most. My job is to prepare the team and ensure we are ready.”

She does not believe facing her former side creates a different kind of pressure. Chelsea have just come through another high-level fixture against Arsenal, and Bompastor expects her players to handle the occasion with the same competitive focus.

Champions League remains Chelsea’s missing prize

Bompastor said Chelsea’s recruitment and squad-building are geared towards competing on every front, with European success a central ambition. She highlighted the need to combine experienced players with emerging talent, while also recognising that the competition has become increasingly demanding as more clubs increase their investment in the women’s game.

“Chelsea have ambitions and we build a squad to challenge for every trophy, particularly the Champions League,” she said. “It is the one the club has not won. You need the right mix of experienced players and young players, and the competition is getting harder because more teams are investing. At times, you also need some luck to turn things your way.”

Confidence ahead of a demanding away night

The Chelsea head coach believes her side are close to being able to match Europe’s strongest teams. Rather than looking too far ahead in the competition, she wants her players to take each fixture individually and bring a ruthless mentality against leading opponents.

“We are not far away,” Bompastor said. “There is a lot of quality and talent in this team. We have to go game by game and be extremely competitive. Against the biggest opponents, we approach games with that killer instinct.”

Wednesday’s match will provide an early measure of those ambitions. Lyon’s emphatic victory over Servette has set the initial pace, while Chelsea arrive in France seeking to build on their narrow opening win and demonstrate that their strong away record in this competition can stand up in one of Europe’s most difficult venues.
