Atlético Madrid Punish Huijsen Red to Beat Real Madrid 2-0 in Derby
Real Madrid’s derby at the Metropolitano unravelled after Dean Huijsen’s second-half dismissal, with Atlético Madrid converting the resulting penalty before Jonathan David sealed a 2-0 victory six minutes later.
José Mourinho’s side arrived with encouraging statistical form but could not establish authority in the Spanish capital. Atlético controlled 65% of the ball, restricted Real to two efforts on target and repeatedly forced their visitors into long passes rather than the direct attacks needed to release Kylian Mbappé.
The decisive second-half spell
- Real had already struggled for attacking momentum before Denzel Dumfries was booked in the 49th minute after a cynical foul.
- Huijsen was sent off in the 52nd minute, conceding the penalty that gave Atlético the opportunity to take the lead.

The loss of Huijsen left Real’s defence under sustained pressure. The young centre-back had been physically overwhelmed and his departure proved the central moment of the contest. His defensive partner Ibrahima Konaté produced nine clearances and seven interceptions, but was drawn out of position for David’s goal as the forward moved into the area he had vacated.
Real’s Belgian goalkeeper made four important saves to prevent the margin becoming heavier. Neither Grimaldo’s penalty nor David’s close-range finish was realistically within his reach, while limited movement ahead of him restricted his distribution and encouraged more direct clearances.
Midfield and attack fail to respond
Federico Valverde covered considerable ground as captain, completing 88% of his passes, although much of his work was sideways as he was drawn into defensive duties. Aurélien Tchouaméni could not provide consistent protection in transition and was replaced in the 71st minute as Mourinho looked for greater energy.
Jude Bellingham found little connection with Mbappé and was closely managed by José Cardoso. The England international was booked in the 78th minute after an afternoon in which his frustrations became increasingly visible.
Vinícius Júnior was contained by Nahuel Molina and Romero, producing no clear opening from his dribbling before he was taken off early in the second half during the tactical reshuffle. Mbappé received minimal service, repeatedly dropping away from the penalty area to find possession. His two attempts did not seriously trouble Jan Oblak.
On the flanks, Marc Cucurella spent much of the match dealing with Marcos Llorente’s forward runs and did not complete a successful cross. Dumfries offered little width before his booking and was regularly beaten for pace by Grimaldo.
Mourinho’s changes come after the damage
A defensive replacement entered in the 54th minute and added aggression at the back, but Atlético had already seized momentum. Another substitute was used to restore shape, only to struggle with the speed of Atlético’s late counter-attacks. A later midfield introduction offered some of the forward passing that had been absent earlier, while an 82nd-minute substitute had no meaningful time to change the outcome.
Mourinho’s set-up left Real too passive for a derby of this scale. By conceding possession and territory, his side exposed a youthful defence to waves of Atlético pressure. Once Huijsen was dismissed, the response was reactive and Real could not produce an alternative route back into the contest.
