Aston Villa Sign Japan Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in Deal Worth Up to £30m
Aston Villa’s search for an Emiliano Martinez successor has brought Zion Suzuki to the Premier League, with the Japan international arriving after an impressive summer on the World Cup stage and a previous spell in Serie A with Parma. The 24-year-old, born in New Jersey, has joined Unai Emery’s group in a transfer that could rise to £30 million ($41m), despite earlier interest linking him with Paris Saint-Germain.

Suzuki’s performances in North America raised his profile considerably, and Villa have acted quickly as they begin life without Martinez. The Argentina goalkeeper, a World Cup winner, has departed for Chelsea, leaving Emery to install a new first-choice option.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop believes Villa have recruited exceptionally well. He said Suzuki had been outstanding during the summer tournament, praising the goalkeeper’s all-round technique and describing him as a complete player in the position.
Hislop acknowledged the scale of Martinez’s exit but felt Villa had found an appropriate replacement. In his view, Suzuki has the ability to establish himself among the division’s leading goalkeepers during the 2026-27 campaign.
Martinez remains part of a strong Premier League goalkeeping group that also includes Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Liverpool’s long-serving title winner Alisson. At Arsenal, however, Raya has set the recent standard in the Golden Glove race.
The 30-year-old Spaniard has collected at least a portion of the award in each of the past three seasons. Petr Cech and Joe Hart are the only goalkeepers to have won it four times. Raya also added a World Cup winner’s medal in 2026 to the Premier League title he secured with Arsenal.
Raya faces Spain competition despite Arsenal form
Raya’s club record has not made him Spain’s undisputed No.1. Unai Simon has retained the position ahead of both the Arsenal goalkeeper and Barcelona’s Joan Garcia, who won La Liga with his club.
Hislop said there had been considerable discussion before the tournament over whether Raya, Garcia or Simon would start, but he expected Simon to keep the shirt. While Raya and Garcia could each point to major domestic achievements, Simon has proved especially suited to the demands of Luis de la Fuente’s Spain side.
Spain’s goalkeeper operates with a high and proactive line, and Hislop argued that Simon’s compatibility with the back four has been central to his continued selection. Spain’s results during the tournament reinforced that judgement, with Hislop seeing no immediate route for either challenger to dislodge him.
Raya will nevertheless seek to change that situation during the next UEFA Nations League cycle and in the build-up to Spain’s attempt to retain the European Championship in 2028. Before then, his attention returns to Arsenal’s Premier League campaign, where Suzuki is among the prominent new arrivals helping to reshape the division.
