Arsenal Beat Ipswich as Dowman Stars and Merino Captains Cup Win

Arsenal progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth round with a 4-2 win at Ipswich Town on Tuesday, preserving their perfect start across every competition this season despite extensive changes to the side.

Max Dowman set the visitors on their way before Noni Madueke extended the advantage with a composed finish before half-time. Dowman struck again after the break, while captain Mikel Merino completed Arsenal’s scoring with a well-placed effort.

Ipswich reduced the deficit through Anis Mehmeti and Chuba Akpom, but Arsenal had already established enough control to see out the tie and secure a place in Wednesday night’s fourth-round draw.

Merino marks captaincy with goal and assist

Merino led Arsenal out wearing the armband and delivered a decisive midfield performance, combining a goal with the assist for Madueke’s first-half strike.

The Spain international described captaining the club as a major personal moment, saying he was proud to follow the many Arsenal figures who had previously worn the armband. He added that he understood the responsibility attached to representing the club in that role.

His assist came after he reacted sharply to a loose second ball under pressure and picked out Madueke, who finished cleanly. Merino then capped his own display by receiving the ball in the final third, shifting it with his first touch and placing his shot beyond the goalkeeper.

The midfielder said he was pleased to contribute in both boxes and intended to keep adding goals over the season.

Young players offer depth boost

Arsenal’s altered line-up still controlled much of the contest, with Dowman’s two goals providing the standout attacking contribution. Teenage prospect Marli Salmon also impressed, offering further encouragement over the options available to Mikel Arteta during a demanding campaign.

With another victory secured, Arsenal will learn their next Carabao Cup opponents when the fourth-round draw is held on Wednesday evening.
