7,000 Hamburg Fans Welcome Mario Vuskovic Back to Training

Hamburg’s open training session was moved to the club’s main stadium after supporter interest exceeded expectations, with about 7,000 fans turning out to welcome Mario Vuskovic back onto the pitch after almost four years away.

A stadium welcome for Vuskovic

The Croatian centre-back was greeted by banners and sustained chants from Hamburg supporters as he joined the squad in public training. The occasion marked his first appearance before fans since the beginning of his lengthy suspension.

There were familiar faces in the stands as well. Former Hamburg coach Tim Walter attended alongside Sebastian Schonlau and Jonas Meffert, both former team-mates of Vuskovic who are now with Holstein Kiel.

Muheim backs former colleague

Left-back Miro Muheim, one of just two players still at Hamburg from Vuskovic’s previous competitive appearance, described the defender’s return as an emotional moment for the squad.

Muheim said the group had consistently believed Vuskovic was innocent, calling him a person of considerable strength and character. The Swiss international also believes that Vuskovic’s presence alone can aid Hamburg’s dressing room as he begins work towards playing again.

Having come through the difficult period, Muheim said he was convinced the defender could complete his route back to football.

Family resilience recognised by Hamburg

Hamburg’s board has also highlighted the support around Vuskovic. Board member Eric Huwer said club officials had spent time with the whole family, including parents Sanja and Daniel as well as Mario’s younger brother Luka.

Luka Vuskovic spent last season on loan from Tottenham Hotspur before completing a move to Brighton worth €54 million, equivalent to £46 million and $62 million. Huwer said the family’s record gave him confidence that Mario Vuskovic would return.

Competitive return set for November

Vuskovic is currently training under physical coach Josko Vlasic, but the remaining conditions of his ban sharply limit his involvement. He cannot play a competitive match before Hamburg’s Nordderby against Werder Bremen on November 22.

Until the suspension has formally ended, he is also unable to speak to the media, sign autographs or take part in Hamburg promotional activity. The club’s immediate task is to restore his fitness and match conditioning, with the aim of preparing him for a Bundesliga comeback after the autumn international break.
