Ansu Fati Targets Monaco Revival After Europa League Goal
Ansu Fati’s attempt to rebuild his career at Monaco has begun with a Europa League goal, but the 23-year-old remains focused on restoring the fitness and consistency that once made him Barcelona’s outstanding young prospect.

Fati emerged from Barcelona’s academy with exceptional expectations attached to him. His competitive first-team appearance came at 16, and his early displays led to suggestions that he could one day fill the void left by Lionel Messi.
That rise was interrupted sharply in 2020-21, when a meniscus problem sidelined him for more than 300 days. Although he returned to feature 51 times in 2022-23 and registered at least 10 goals, the forward struggled to regain the same rhythm and physical freedom.
Barcelona subsequently sent him on loan to Brighton for the 2023-24 campaign. The spell in the Premier League did not provide the intended reset, and Monaco later offered him another route forward. The Ligue 1 club completed a permanent deal in the summer of 2026, tying the Spain international to a four-year agreement.
Former Monaco player Gilles Grimandi believes Fati’s principal obstacle has been his physical record rather than the burden of wearing Barcelona’s No. 10 shirt, which he inherited five years ago. Grimandi said that repeated injuries prevented the forward from consistently showing the talent he displayed as a teenager.
While acknowledging Fati’s ability, Grimandi said he does not place him at the level of players such as Lamine Yamal. He nevertheless feels there is still an opportunity for Fati to recover his standing, provided he can establish a sustained run of appearances rather than pursue an immediate return to the elite end of the transfer market.
Grimandi’s assessment was that Fati must first become a regular for Monaco, maintain his fitness over an extended period and rediscover his scoring habits. In his view, six months of continuous involvement would offer a clearer indication of how far the forward can progress.
Fati has already opened his account for the 2026-27 season, scoring in Monaco’s Europa League victory over CSKA Sofia. Monaco face Freiburg on Thursday, giving him another opportunity to build momentum in a competition that could become important to his revival.
With 10 Spain caps already on his record, Fati still has time to reshape a career that has been repeatedly disrupted. Monaco now need him available week after week, with goals and match fitness the immediate measures of whether his promising start can become a lasting comeback.
