Alexander-Arnold Sets Up Gordon as England Beat Czech Republic
Trent Alexander-Arnold marked his return to England’s starting side by creating Anthony Gordon’s decisive opening goal in Prague, as Thomas Tuchel’s team responded after their 3-2 Wembley defeat to Spain.
Alexander-Arnold makes his case
The Real Madrid defender was selected from the outset for the Nations League meeting with the Czech Republic, his first England start since October 2024. On that occasion, under caretaker Lee Carsley, he played at left-back in a win against Finland.
- Tuchel named Alexander-Arnold at right-back, making him the ninth player used in that position during the manager’s 24 matches in charge.
- England controlled much of the ball but found the Czech back line difficult to breach in the opening stages.

Alexander-Arnold had made a long run forward, estimated at 70 yards, shortly before supplying the goal. The assist underlined the passing quality that has long distinguished the former Liverpool player, following a period in which he had been left out of England squads, including the recent World Cup group.
Tuchel highlights positional adjustment
Tuchel praised Alexander-Arnold’s application as well as his key contribution, describing his defender’s attitude as professional and identifying the assist as the game’s decisive moment.
The England manager said there had never been any doubt over Alexander-Arnold’s capacity to produce such a pass. He felt, however, that the player benefited from operating deeper after half-time than he had during the first period.
Tuchel also said England’s display had been controlled and professional, while acknowledging that the early dismissal significantly altered the contest and could make the task mentally more awkward for the side with the numerical advantage.
Croatia fixture ahead
England next play Croatia on Saturday, with both countries on three points. Tuchel’s side need victory to preserve their hopes of advancing to the Nations League knockout rounds, and Alexander-Arnold will hope his display in Prague earns him another opportunity in the starting XI.
