Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Every Legendary Chest Outside Castles & Kofuns
Legendary Chests are among the most rewarding collectibles in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, since each one hands you standout Legendary gear (armor or weapons) plus an engraving that can be applied to other equipment. Many of them are tucked inside Castles and Kofuns, but the open world also hides a separate set of Legendary Chests—this guide section focuses on every one that’s located outside those structures.
Key takeaways
- Legendary Chests always include valuable Legendary gear and an engraving you can transfer to other equipment.
- This guide segment lists Legendary Chest locations found in the open world, not inside Castles or Kofuns.
- Multiple items here are Naoe-specific, Yasuke-specific, or even limited to one character despite being an amulet or other slot type.
- Several chests require specific traversal tricks—swimming to moving “castle boats,” climbing waterfall viewpoints, or using stealth routes through caves and narrow gaps.
- A few entries only unlock after completing main-quest and side-quest progress, most notably the Koromodako Cave chest.

Katana – Bloodshade
- Location: Izumi Settsu – Osaka

- Engraving – Affliction Does not Drain
This Legendary Chest is located in Osaka, a sub-region on the western coast of Izumi Settsu. It’s placed on one of the floating Japanese “castle boats,” specifically the vessel sitting west of the Burnt Village of Nakajima (an island northwest of Osaka City).
You can swim over, but it’s quicker if you can take control of a small boat and sail to it instead. Approach the western side of the floating boat.
Climb up and eliminate the two guards on that side. The chest sits on the building’s top floor. It’s in the room’s northwest corner, and it’s visible through the window that Naoe can jump through.
The loot is the Bloodshade Legendary Katana for Naoe. Its perk ensures Affliction Buildup (covering Bleed, Poison, and Daze) won’t drain over time, making it easier to stack afflictions on enemies—especially the defensive Samurai.

Only three bandits are here, and they’re among the weakest threats in the game. After they’re dealt with, search inside the largest building in camp.
The chest is tucked into the right-hand corner.
The reward is the Legendary Tanto for Naoe, named Igan Sunset. Its perk slows down time after using the Escape Strike Tanto ability.

The camp only has three bandits wandering around, so it shouldn’t be too hard to clear. The chest is in the charred main building at the camp.
The item inside is the Oni’s Fury Legendary Trinket. Its distinctive effect grants +15% damage for every non-Legendary gear piece you’re currently using. With four other equipment slots (Primary and Secondary weapons, plus Headgear and Armor), that can stack up to a massive +60% damage.

On the climb toward Kuji-kiri, you’ll need to hop across a ravine using a wooden pole instead of a destroyed bridge. Check the ravine’s bottom for a broken cart; the chest is between its shafts.

To reach the chest, enter through the red torii gate and move east until you see three monk tombstones with a lantern beside them. To the right of those tombstones is another lantern leading to a path with a red tree (red even in summer). The Legendary Chest sits beneath that tree.
Inside is Rage of Red Mist, a Legendary Kanabo for Yasuke. The perk grants a burst of Adrenaline after you break an opponent’s armor.

To get there, jump off Genbu Panorama Viewpoint into the haystack, then follow the downhill route until you reach a large statue with a wooden fire behind it. Climb up the cliff’s rocky ledges behind the statue and slightly to his left. At the top, climb up the left section on your right to locate the chest.
The item inside is Cascading Fear, a Legendary Teppo for Yasuke. Its perk makes headshots always kill enemies if they’re below 25% health.
Trinket – Graceful Crane
- Location: Omi – The Shimmering Fields – Mikami Viewpoint
This Trinket is in The Shimmering Fields, the southeastern sub-region of Omi province. You’ll be looking for a town called Koga, and to its east is the Mikami Viewpoint.
The tricky part: both the viewpoint and the Legendary Chest are on top of a waterfall. Climb up the right-hand side of the falls, then jump over to the left using a branch, and continue climbing. There are three climb points using square wooden posts embedded in rock. Each start point is marked by a wooden lamp post.
Once you reach the top, inspect the shallow square pit at the base of the viewpoint’s gnarled tree to find the Legendary Chest.
The loot is the Graceful Crane Trinket for Naoe. It grants 150% bonus to all stats when she has no weapons equipped in either weapon slot, which effectively pushes you toward melee attacks only.
Kusarigama – Featherstorm
- Location: Omi – Ibu Highlands – Kashiwabara Fortress
This Legendary Chest is in Kashiwabara Fortress, a “Castle” located in Ibu Highlands, in the northeastern part of Omi. Calling it a castle is a bit generous—it’s essentially an abandoned fortress with Outlaws occupying only part of it. The Kashiwabara Tower Viewpoint is also on the grounds.
Despite its look, the chest access is straightforward. It’s in the northern half of the fortress, and that section is completely unguarded. Look in the northern half’s southeastern corner for a shallow square hole—inside is the Legendary Chest.
The item inside is Featherstorm, a Legendary Kusarigama for Naoe. Its unique perk instantly charges Posture attacks when it connects with multiple enemies.

Go to the tree and check behind it; the chest is tucked inside the rocks.
The weapon inside is Patient Harbinger, a Legendary Teppo for Yasuke. Its unique perk lets the gun load two bullets instead of one. That takes longer, but it means you can fire two shots before needing to reload—helpful early in fights because you’ll already have ammunition loaded.

The chest is at the northern end of the onsen, where the waterfalls are. Look at the rock platforms on the right side of the falls.

The route to Nagusano Falls stands out: the road ends at a curved bridge covered in blood and corpses. The path then curves to a shrine. Climb up the ledges behind that shrine to reach the left side of the nearby waterfall—this is where the chest is.
The loot is the Samurai Daimyo Helmet of Legend, a Legendary Helmet for Yasuke. Its unique effect triggers Samurai Stand when Yasuke dies in combat, converting all attacks into Posture Attacks. This effect only activates once per combat encounter.

Even though it’s an amulet meant for Yasuke, only Naoe can actually pick it up.
Blackstone Cascades is a waterfall with a calm pool and a campfire at the bottom. As you’d expect, the chest is at the base of the waterfall. There’s a narrow passage that Naoe can squeeze through.
Push through the cave and pass two low areas until you reach an open room with a haystack. Find the central column with a candle at its base that you can ignite. Climb the column, and the chest will be at the top on your right.
The item inside is the Headhunter Amulet for Yasuke. Its unique perk grants +15% to stats when he has only a Long Katana equipped.

At the top, the chest is at the base of the wall on your right. However, the Godai Of Wind is also there, and you need to defeat her before opening the chest.
The item inside is Masked Death, a Legendary Katana for Naoe. Its unique perk keeps Posture attacks charged after Dodging, which is especially useful for stepping out of an enemy strike and then hitting hard immediately.

- Legendary Amulet – Fujin’s Tempest

- Legendary Amulet – Fujin’s Tempest
- Engraving – Damage for Alerted Provinces
The Koromodako Cave Legendary Chest is especially confusing because it doesn’t behave like most others. It only becomes available after you complete a sequence of main-quest and side-quest objectives. Until then, the cave entrance is blocked and looks like it’s just part of the cliff wall.
Before you can unlock access to the Koromodako Cave chest, complete the following:
- Advance the story until you unlock the “Red Walls” quest in Wakasa. It’s listed under “The Fox” in the Objectives board’s The Shinbakfuku section. Then keep progressing through “The Fox” quests until you unlock “The Music.”
- Speak with Shido the Biwa Master to open the “The Pirate Alliance” side quest.
- Eliminate the four targets listed in the Objectives board under “The Pirate Alliance.”
- Finish the “Sweet Lies” and “Sweet Revenge” side quests in Wakasa.
- Continue through “The Fox” quests until you defeat The Fox in the main quest “The Performer.”
- Go back to Shido the Biwa Master and talk to him again.
For more specific instructions, there’s a dedicated page for the Korodomako Cave Legendary Chest.
Once you’ve completed everything above, you can finally reach the Legendary Chest. It’s in the Shattered Coast, the western side sub-region of Wakasa. The chest is in Koromodako Cave—west of Maizuru’s Lair and south of Nariu’s Lair. A pirate ship also appears to the southeast when viewing the map.
Head to an inlet with waterfalls in the background, then climb up to the pair of waterfalls at the bottom.
Get off the water and move up to the falls. On the right side is a beached boat, and a man playing the biwa near a campfire. When you approach, he stops immediately and tends to his boat.
If the cliff to the right of the waterfalls doesn’t have a large cave entrance, you haven’t finished all required tasks. Scroll back up and double-check you completed everything.
Enter the cave opening near the campfire, then dive underwater to get under and past the stalagmites (there’s also a gap wide enough to swim through on the surface if you’d rather).
On the far side, the chest is clearly visible on top of a rock formation in the middle of a shallow pool.
Inside is Fujin’s Tempest, a Legendary Amulet for Yasuke. Its unique perk increases damage by 10% for every province where Yasuke is wanted. It’s useful, but remember provinces are enormous, and Yasuke’s wanted status resets with each seasonal transition.

If you head a bit south instead, you can find a second campsite with two outlaws. On the left-hand wall of that area are objects you can destroy using a melee weapon. That reveals a low passage you can crawl through as either character.
On the other side, turn right to find the chest beside a dead outlaw.

This Legendary Chest is in Takeda, the western sub-region of Tamba province. It’s at Aokura Shrine southeast of Nakamachi, and nearby you can find both the Aokura Shrine Viewpoint and Kata activity around the eastern lake.
From the lake with Kata activity, face south and head through the rock arch where the lake drains into a river. As you pass through, watch your right side for a wooden walkway—this chest sits on it.
The item inside is Armor Eater, a Legendary Amulet for Yasuke. Its unique effect adds +15% to all stats when Yasuke has a Bow or Teppo equipped.

This Legendary Chest is in The Silver Lands, the southern sub-region of Tamba province. It’s west of the Annoji Pagoda and its Viewpoint, northeast of the Kabasaka Kakurega, and south of Yakami Fort.
From the Kata activity location, head to the waterfall just north of it and climb to the middle level. Classic dungeon logic applies here: the chest is hidden behind the waterfall.
The item inside is the Extravagant Kabukimono Headgear, a Legendary Helmet for Yasuke. Its unique perk makes Yasuke automatically perform a Weakpoint attack after a successful Parry. It deals more damage than the Protector’s Helmet (which deals 50%), but you’ll be locked into an automatic attack animation you can’t cancel.

This Legendary Chest is in Fukuchiyama, the northeastern sub-region of Tamba. It’s on the northern coast, on a small island just north of Yura Fishing Village.
Approach the island from the south and look for a boat. There’s a rock wall you can climb with a narrow passage at the top—slip through it as Naoe.
On the other side, the chest is directly ahead.
The item inside is the Extravagant Kabukimono Outfit, Legendary Armor for Yasuke. Its unique perk refills an entire Adrenaline Chunk for every Weakpoint Attack.
