Disney Dreamlight Valley: Tame Every Animal in Honeyglow Woods by Feeding Them

Disney Dreamlight Valley’s charm isn’t just in its cozy farming and story quests—it’s also in the way the world fills up with small, roaming companions. By feeding the right creatures their preferred foods, you can tame them, earn additional resources from the process, and then choose which tamed animal follows you around. A key twist: some animals only accept food once per day, so building trust takes a bit of patience and planning across multiple visits.

How animal companions work in Dreamlight Valley

Across Dreamlight Valley’s different regions, you’ll encounter wild critters that can become companions. The basic method is straightforward: approach the animal, feed it its favorite item, and it will become tame—then you can select it as a follower. The exact number of times you need to feed a specific creature varies, and in some cases, feeding grants Dream Shards as an extra reward.

Feeding isn’t always available, even if you’re holding the correct food. Each animal can only be fed once per day, so if you’ve already offered that creature a meal that day, it won’t accept more. That means taming often stretches across several days rather than happening in a single session.

Once you’ve tamed an animal and want it to follow you, open your inventory and go to the left-side tab labeled “Wardrobe.” From there, choose “Companions,” and select one of the animals you’ve already tamed to have it trail you through the valley.

Where to find the newest tameable animals

Different areas contain different kinds of animals, including both base-game creatures and additions tied to paid expansions. For the original release, the game includes turtle-like companions, rabbits, and more. Expansion content adds new biomes and new companion types, each with its own approach behavior, variants, and favorite foods.

Honeyglow Woods: Igel (hedgehogs)

With the Adventure Pack Honeyglow Woods, hedgehogs join the companion roster. The mechanics of taming don’t change compared to other animals, but the food and approach details matter. You can find them in Honeyglow Woods, and their variants include classic, green, yellow, and orange. Their favorite foods are Heffalump buds and Golden Honey, while they like all fruits. To get close, approach slowly and stop when the hedgehog curls up, then wait until you can safely reach it.

Wishblossom Ranch: geese, skunks, and bees

Access to the three Wishblossom Ranch companions requires purchasing Wishblossom Ranch. The biome setup places one animal type in each area, and the taming approach remains consistent in principle. Geese are found in Wish Alps, with variants including blue, white, yellow, black, and a Canada goose option. They love red currants and like all berries. You can simply walk up since they don’t run away.

Skunks live in Shimmering Grounds. Their variants include classic, brown, patterned, white, and Professor Mouffette. Skunks love button mushrooms and needle cushion peaches, and they also like cheese, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. For these, approach slowly and stop immediately when they enter alarm stance so you can reach them gradually.

Bees are located in Fairylands. Their variants include yellow, blue, pink, and white. Bees love honey corals and like all flowers. They initially fly away—when that happens, you need to chase them three times until they’re exhausted.

The Storybook Vale: owls, pegasus, and dragons

The Storybook Vale expansion adds three new animal companions, each tied to one of the pack’s new biomes. To unlock them, you need the paid addon. Owls can be found in the Binding and Library, with variants including brown, dark, light, and purple. They love barley and like every type of grain. Owls don’t run away, so you can just walk up to them.

Pegasi appear in Mythopia. Variants include pink, peach, yellow, and blue. They love vegetable dishes with four or more stars, and they like all vegetable dishes. To tame a pegasus, follow it until it becomes tired enough to lie down.

Dragons are located in the Forest of Eternity. Variants include red, green, blue, and purple. They love magma and Pure Ice, and they like all gemstones. Approach carefully and move quietly; otherwise, dragons roll into a curled state.

Base game: additional tameable creatures

Outside the expansion biomes, the base game includes multiple critters with their own approach rules. Squirrels are found at the Plaza, with variants including black, classic, gray, red, and white. They love peanuts and like all fruits, and you can approach them directly.

Crocs live in the Clearing of Trust. Their variants include blue, classic, gold, pink, red, and white. They love lobster and like herring and octopus. You must approach with your head lowered, then stop as soon as the crocodile raises its head; if the crocodile notices you, it will run away.

Rabbits are in the Peaceful Meadow. Variants include black, brown, calico, classic, and white. They love carrots and like all vegetables, but they sprint away when you get near—follow them three times before you can feed them.

Turtles are found on the Shimmering Shore. Their variants include black, brown, classic, purple, and white. They love seaweed and like all seafood items. When you approach, the sea turtle retreats into its shell, so the correct tactic is to wait quietly until it comes back out.

Raccoons appear in the Forest of Courage. Their variants include black, blue, classic, red, and white. They love blueberries and all berries. Approach only when they’re crouched, and stop when they rise onto their hind legs.

Foxes are located in Icy Heights. Their variants include black, blue, classic, red, and white. They love white sturgeon and like salmon. Like rabbits, they run away when you approach—follow them a few times and then you can feed them.

Hummingbird-like Nectar Birds live in Sunny Plateau. Their favorite food depends on color: golden nectar birds love orange houseleaves, red ones love red bromeliads, emerald ones love green passion lilies, turquoise ones love pink houseleaves, and orchid nectar birds love any flower.

Ravens are found in Forgotten Lands, with variants including blue, brown, black, red, and white. Their favorite food is any five-star dish. When you get close, they fly in a circle; wait until they stop after several rounds, then you can feed them.

A Rift in Time: capybaras, cobras, and monkeys

A Rift in Time adds three more tameable animal companions, one per biome. You need the paid expansion to access them. Monkeys appear in Ancient Lands, with variants including beige, red-and-beige, black-and-brown, and black-and-gray. They love any five-star dessert and like three- to four-star desserts. They run away if you approach, but you can feed them after following multiple times.

Capybaras are found in the Wild Jungle. Variants include blue, gray, red-and-white, and black-and-white. They love lettuce and like cinnamon and bamboo. Cobras live in Shimmering Dunes, with variants including blue-and-red, yellow-and-lilac, green-and-white, and pink. Cobras love eggs and like scorpions. When approaching, wait for them to stretch their head upward, then feed them once they calm down.

Other companion sources beyond wild animals

Animal companions aren’t limited to the roaming creatures you tame. The game also includes other followers that players obtain through editions, early access, completed friendship quests, or time-limited event mechanics.

Baby Pegasus is available as a special homage tied only to the Magical Edition of The Storybook Vale. A chocolate crocodile companion is granted automatically if you play the game during the first week of early access (which has already passed). A “heavenly” sea turtle companion comes with the Luxury Edition and the Ultimate Edition, while the King’s Fox is available in the Ultimate Edition.

Pua is earned through progress with Vaiana: once you reach friendship level eight, you receive a quest titled “In Search of Pua.” Completing that quest awards Pua as a companion.

Finally, Dreamlight Valley’s regular events can also provide companion opportunities. These events require you to complete tasks to earn event currency, which can then be spent to purchase event rewards—meaning it can be worth checking in on events periodically if you’re hunting for specific followers.
