Dying Light: The Beast Drops PS4 and Xbox One After Technical Limits Cited
Techland has pulled the plug on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Dying Light: The Beast, citing “the technical realities of development” as the reason it can’t move forward on last-gen hardware.
Key takeaways
- Techland canceled the PS4 and Xbox One releases of Dying Light: The Beast.
- The studio says the decision comes down to “the technical realities of development.”
- Dying Light: The Beast launched last year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
- Refunds will be offered for the canceled last-gen versions.
- Techland has also announced Dying Light: The Beast Restored Land, described as a new edition that bundles the full game and all post-launch content.
Last-gen versions canceled, refunds promised
Dying Light: The Beast is a first-person zombie-slaying entry in the franchise that arrived on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S last year. While reviews noted its mix of style and spectacle, it scored a 7/10, with the criticism that it doesn’t do much to meaningfully change up the formula beyond a “goofy, bloody sequel” presentation and a “monstrous twist.”
Techland originally planned to bring the game to PS4 and Xbox One as well, though the idea was widely viewed as a stretch given how far those platforms are from today’s baseline. Now Techland says the compromises required to make Dying Light: The Beast work on those systems would be too significant. In its online statement, the company confirmed it will provide refunds for the canceled versions.
Techland also pointed out a key context for the decision: both the PS4 and Xbox One are now 13 years old.
What Techland is doing next: Restored Land and a new fantasy project
Alongside the last-gen cancellation news, Techland highlighted its ongoing plans for the game’s lifecycle. In March of this year, the studio announced a new edition named Dying Light: The Beast Restored Land. This edition, as described by Techland, includes the complete base game, all post-release content, and additional content specifically tied to “Restored Land.”
When asked what comes next for the franchise, Techland did not provide further details. However, it did confirm that the Polish studio is currently working on a fantasy game.
