Subnautica 2’s First Early Access Update Arrives as Sales Hit 5 Million
Subnautica 2 has rolled out its first big Early Access update, and it’s aimed at more than just expanding the game’s content. Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment (UWE) has released the studio’s first community-led patch while also confirming a major sales milestone: the game has now passed 5 million copies sold in under a month since beginning Early Access.
Early Access update plus 5 million milestone
Reaching 5 million units is a notable benchmark for any release, but it carries extra weight for Subnautica 2. The milestone arrives after months of legal conflict tied to a $250 million bonus dispute between UWE and publisher Krafton. That back-and-forth has ended in a settlement, with bonuses set to be paid to every employee at Unknown Worlds. This includes staff who joined the studio after its 2021 acquisition.
At the same time, CEO Ted Gill has stepped down. Gill said the decision was mutually agreed by both sides, with the belief that new leadership would be the best route forward—closing out the long-running controversy surrounding Subnautica 2.

What’s in the first community-driven patch
- The studio says this initial Early Access update is strongly shaped by player feedback, with changes aimed at both core systems and deeper exploration/progression.
- Two new Biolabs have been added: Coral Gardens and Axum Ruins.
- Biomods have been expanded from 4 to 6.
- Players can unlock additional passive Biomod slots by scanning creatures with the Bioscanner.

- Extra passive Biomod slots: unlocked through creature scans using the Bioscanner.
Co-op quality-of-life and gameplay refinements
The update also targets day-to-day play improvements, with special attention on Subnautica 2’s co-op. Audio logs no longer trigger automatically when picked up; instead, they can be accessed manually through the PDA Databank. The stated goal is to stop one player’s discoveries from disrupting the flow of everyone else’s session.
Beyond co-op audio behavior, Unknown Worlds added additional routes and oxygen-based puzzle elements inside wrecks. There are also movement and building adjustments, including the ability to sprint while outside the water, better building placement for multiple structures, and the introduction of a dedicated storage building. The patch further includes changes to creature behavior, creature rendering, and the user interface.
Developer goals for Early Access
Executive Producer Fernando Melo explained that the team’s aim with this update was to improve the first hours of the game and reinforce the foundational systems before continuing to grow the overall experience. Melo also said development will continue alongside the community throughout Early Access, with player input remaining a key driver for future updates.
The sales and update cadence underline how fast Subnautica 2 has become one of 2026’s most prominent survival games. If this first patch reflects the broader plan, Unknown Worlds intends to follow through on its Early Access promise: deliver meaningful new content while continuously refining most parts of the survival experience ahead of the full release, with feedback from the community considered at every stage.
