Xbox Layoffs Hit Elder Scrolls Artist Behind Khajiit and Argonian Lore
Xbox has been hit by a layoff wave described as unprecedented, with cuts reaching across the company’s studio network. In many cases, teams were not just reduced—they were reportedly dismantled through severe staffing changes, and some studios have reportedly been sold off or otherwise removed from the business. The scale of talent departures has been hard to ignore, and fresh details continue to underline how far the impact stretches.
Layoffs: Studios Affected, plus a High-Profile Bethesda Departure
Among the newly reported cases is the recent layoff of a veteran character artist who spent 27 years at Bethesda. The artist’s work is tied to major, long-running roles within The Elder Scrolls series—an especially striking loss given how central character design is to the franchise’s identity.
Xbox Just Laid Off The Designer Behind Khajiit And Argonian Looks
The news was first flagged by a BlueSky user, Lady Nerevar. The artist in question is Christiane Meister, a longtime character artist whose contributions span nearly every modern entry in The Elder Scrolls. Her work began with Khajiit and Argonians in Morrowind, before she moved into other creature and character categories in later games such as Oblivion and Skyrim, including work focused on horses.
Meister has also contributed creature-related design for the Fallout universe, reinforcing how broad her impact has been across Bethesda’s RPG ecosystem. With a tenure approaching three decades, she’s been presented as one of the key creative figures inside the studio pipeline.
Her influence is also visible in Skyrim, where she helped refresh some of her original creations. That update is credited with helping transform Argonians and Khajiit from the more unsettling “beast men” look associated with earlier material into the recognizable versions fans generally associate with the series today.
Beyond individual staff losses, the bigger business picture is equally grim. Reports claim that eight studios acquired under Phil Spencer are no longer part of the company. That figure is said to exclude additional cuts affecting studios that were reassigned to Call of Duty-related support work.
For Bethesda and Xbox overall, this kind of departure is framed as a major loss—especially because the layoffs don’t appear to align with the near-term needs of major franchises. It’s hard to see how expertise like Meister’s wouldn’t be valuable for The Elder Scrolls 6, even if Xbox’s current direction and decision-making have been questioned by many observers.

Meister will likely have options on the job market, since her resume is described as exceptionally strong. Still, not every creator can point to a specific race and say, “I made that,” and Meister’s body of work suggests she earned far better treatment than the circumstances she’s reportedly facing.
