Xbox Game Pass July Lineup Announced After Layoffs, Despite Strategy Setback
Microsoft has laid out the first half of July’s Xbox Game Pass additions, publishing its latest subscription lineup in the immediate wake of major Xbox layoffs that hit the business earlier this week.
July timing, platforms, and editions
| Game | Release date | Platforms | Game Pass editions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winds of Arcana: Ruination | July 6 | Cloud, Console, Handheld, PC | Ultimate, Premium, PC Game Pass |
| Ascend to Zero | July 13 | Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, PC | Ultimate, PC Game Pass |
| Gears of War: Reloaded | July 9 | Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, PC | Premium (in addition to Ultimate and PC Game Pass) |
The changes come after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced cuts totaling 1,600 employees yesterday, with an additional 1,600 roles expected to leave over the next twelve months. As part of the reshuffle, four studios also exited Microsoft. Sharma described the overall restructuring as the “most significant in Xbox history.”
When addressing the layoffs, Sharma was direct about why Microsoft believes its current gaming approach has underperformed. She pointed to Game Pass as a major contributor, explaining that the company had anticipated subscriptions would reach roughly 77 million during this year, but the service currently sits at about 30 million. She also referenced earlier targets revealed during the FTC v. Microsoft case in 2023, where Microsoft’s internal expectations included reaching 100 million subscribers by 2030—an outcome that now looks unlikely given the present numbers.
The “reset Xbox” message
“Our business today is not healthy,” Sharma said. She added that Xbox is operating with margins estimated to be three to ten times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. Sharma also argued that Microsoft entered the “Gen 9” console era with a smaller user base while carrying a higher cost structure. In order to grow, she said the company leaned on Game Pass, multi-platform distribution, and a wider content lineup.
Sharma acknowledged that those efforts created real value, but said they did not expand at the pace Microsoft expected. As that gap persisted, she claimed Xbox’s core business weakened. She then described how Microsoft responded by adding more teams, increasing investment, and extending timelines in hopes of a better result. Sharma’s statement also highlighted what she called the industry’s most severe hardware crisis in its history, concluding that the company needs to “reset Xbox.”
Despite ongoing questions around where Game Pass fits into Xbox’s future, Microsoft confirmed what subscribers can play during the first half of this month. The list includes several recognizable names—ranging from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+ 2 to Palworld (notably listed as version 1.0)—alongside a set of newer additions arriving across multiple devices.
For the immediate start of the month, Microsoft says Winds of Arcana: Ruination is available starting today, July 6. The title is a 2.5D action Metroidvania and will land on Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC. It joins Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass. The only day-one release listed in this window is Ascend to Zero, which arrives on July 13 across Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, Handheld, and PC, and is set to be available through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Microsoft’s Xbox Wire post announcing the Game Pass slate does not include any discussion of the layoffs or the studio exits mentioned in the company’s broader Xbox restructuring updates.
