Creepy Castle Boss Battle: King Kut

Bananas Required: 400
Character: Lanky Kong (to start with)

Start by using the Bananaporter 2 to locate an easy route out to Troff ‘n’ Scoff inside Creepy Castle. Once you reach the door, you’ll need to feed it 400 bananas to make it open.

For the fight itself, your go-to combatant is Lanky Kong.

This boss isn’t the real K. Rool. Instead, you’re dealing with a cardboard cutout version of him, called King Kut.

  1. Begin the encounter by hopping into cannons to fire Lanky at King Kut three separate times.
  2. While you’re bombarding him, Kut fires back with laser blasts.
  3. During the early portion of the match, Kut “pops out” twice, and each time he appears he launches four laser blasts.
  4. After those initial three hits, King Kut becomes vulnerable to a follow-up attack.

Following the third successful hit, King Kut takes damage and his arm comes off. When his second attack phase begins, a Kritter-in-a-Sheet spawns to mess with you on the platform. You can eliminate those attackers to both reduce pressure and refill your health.

After you land a few more hits, King Kut shifts into an illusion phase. Two King Kuts appear at once, but only one is real. The fake is identifiable by its darker color and by the fact that it can’t fire lasers.

Your targeting matters here: if you shoot the wrong one (for example, by firing at yourself when you’re aiming at the fake) or otherwise miss your shots, that Kong is removed from the battle. Then the Tag Battle brings in the next combatant. In other words, your “lives” are Kong characters—if none remain, the run ends.

  1. After three additional hits, King Kut breaks into a faster routine.
  2. He pops from his hiding spots super-fast, then slows down again and resumes laser blasting.
  3. During the laser firing, you can’t damage him.
  4. Instead, wait for the moment he appears during his position switch—this is accompanied by a lightning sound—and strike during that brief window.

King Kut always travels counter-clockwise. To make the timing easier, zoom out the camera, watch for him as he emerges on your right, and then enter the cannon at the exact instant he pops out in front of you to deal damage.

After three more hits, the head piece breaks off and the battle concludes.

Complete the fight to earn another boss key.
