Grunty Industries Guide: Challenge 6 Rewards, Enemies, Mini-Games, Boss Fight
Grunty Industries is where Jiggywiggy’s Challenge 6 pays off: once you clear it within the time limit, you’ll drop into the depths of Grunty’s factory. Expect relentless enemies ranging from wrench-swinging maniacs to airborne sentry units, plus a run of tough mini-games and what’s billed as the game’s most demanding boss fight.
Key takeaways
- Clear Jiggywiggy’s Challenge 6 on time to reach Grunty’s factory, packed with mini-games and the game’s toughest boss encounter.
- From the Quagmire, reach Grunty Industries’ entrance by using Springy Step Shoes to jump to a high ledge.
- Open the factory’s main gate by using the split pad on the first floor and placing Banjo and Kazooie on the Main Entrance switches.
- Mumbo Jumbo’s EMP is used twice: first to reach the Electromagnetic Chamber on the second floor, and again on the fourth floor to stop the Crushers.
- Unlocking Warp Pads early makes navigation far easier, especially for fast-travel between key areas and avoiding the factory’s confusing layout.
Entering Grunty Industries
Use the Silo to return to Wasteland, then follow the Digger Machine’s tracks. Head to the right where the trail appears to climb up a wall.
Up the hill on the right, you’ll find a pair of Springy Step Shoes. Wear them to jump to a ledge high on the wall, which routes you into the Quagmire region. The entrance to Grunty Industries is located there.
The Quagmire also contains a long pipe and additional secrets you can come back to later.
Move into the courtyard portion of Grunty Industries, but be ready for a setback: the front doors are sealed. The solution is to use the train. Make your way to the ladder mounted on the wall to your right. In the muck beyond the wall, you’ll spot the Train Button—press it to open the tunnel into the factory.
After the tunnel is open, you can warp back to Cliff Tops and call Chuffy the train into the middle of Grunty’s operation. To summon Chuffy from any train station, stand in front of the wooden train sign and read it. When you want to ride Chuffy to Grunty Industries, enter the train and stand on the pad; Grunty Industries will then appear as a selectable location.
Opening the Main Gate
The first priority inside Grunty Industries is getting the main gate open. Otherwise, you’ll be forced to take the train again after leaving—or you’ll have to save and quit to reset progress. To open it, use the split pad on the first floor inside the factory, then position both Banjo and Kazooie on the switches beside the shutters labeled Main Entrance.
Mumbo Jumbo’s Skull: EMP
Mumbo Jumbo’s Skull—shown here as an industrial approximation—can be found on Floor 3.
Go grab the Glowbo perched on top of the large stack of crates on Floor 3, directly across from the Split-Up pads.
This section has you using Mumbo’s EMP power twice. In each case, you’ll need to quickly jump back to the Skull, then switch control back to Banjo and Kazooie. Move fast, because you won’t have a lot of slack.
The first EMP activation takes place on the second floor inside the Electromagnetic Chamber. To set this up, you must have dropped the Mumbo Pad by unscrewing the screws on the third floor in the Boiler Plant.
The Mumbo Pad is now accessible on this platform:
Once you trigger the EMP, you get 90 seconds to switch back to Banjo and Kazooie, warp to Wumba, and change into the Washing Machine form. As the Washing Machine, drive up onto the large red button in the Electromagnetic Chamber to make the Repair Depot accessible later.
The second EMP use happens on the fourth floor at the Crushers. There’s a Warp Pad here to speed up access.
Again, you’ll need to act quickly: switch back to Banjo and Kazooie and sprint them past the Crushers. You’ll have 45 seconds total to reach the far-end conveyor button and press it to shut the machine down.
Humba Wumba’s Wigwam: Washing Machine
Humba Wumba’s Wigman is on Floor 2. Take the Glowbo from behind the large pipe to the right of her teepee on that level. Hand her the magical creature, and she’ll transform you into a Washing Machine—complete with rapid-fire underwear.
In Washing Machine form, you must press the red button in the Electromagnetic Chamber, collect the Jiggy you earn in the Quality Control mini-game, and wash a pile of dirty coveralls. For more on the Jiggy parts of this area, consult the Grunty Industries Jiggies section.
The Washing Machine transformation is described as more of a hindrance than the other creatures you can become through Wumba. Be careful—don’t use it for exploration.
Find Your Way Around Grunty Industries
Grunty Industries is a maze of tunnels and elevators, made even harder by half floors. There are also exits and windows that lead outside. With all of that going on, it’s easy to lose your bearings.
The recommended approach is to unlock the Warp Pads early. That way, you can fast-travel between Humba and Mumbo, plus reach the Split Pad near the Crusher and the entrance without slogging through the whole layout every time.
In the center of the factory—reachable on the first floor via the conveyer-belt entrance close to the Split Pad—there’s an elevator shaft that goes from the bottom to the top. You’ll first need to open every door, but once they’re opened you can climb upward (using Banjo and Banjo-Kazooie only) to move around faster.
When you’re in Washing Machine form, the only route to the places you need is via the Service Elevator. Banjo-Kazooie can’t use it, and the Washing Machine form also can’t use Warp Pads.
It’s smart to explore the factory while you’re in Banjo-Kazooie form and crawl into every corner. For instance, on the second floor, you can open a passage so the Washing Machine can pass through later.
To do that, head up the wall in this corner:
Then use the conduit to reach the high-up vents.
There are also doorways and pieces of machinery that must be powered first using a Battery. To carry a Battery, you need to be Banjo and use the Taxi Pack move. Before the hopping battery can zap you, stun it, then grab it out of the bag (crouch, use C-Left, and capture with B). Battery locations run from outside above the entry all the way to Level 3 near Mumbo’s Skull.
Once you’ve unlocked the Flight Pads outside, some other items become easier to track down—like the note nest shown below. Just keep in mind that Grunty Industries contains many puzzles you can’t solve until you’ve visited other stages first. If a task stalls, it’s okay to drop it and return later.
