House of the Dragon Confirms Final Season 4 Ending—Episode Guide Update

House of the Dragon has now completed two seasons and is in the middle of its third, with HBO already looking ahead to the show’s endgame. HBO and HBO Max Content chief Casey Bloys has confirmed the series will wrap up after Season 4, setting expectations for how the remaining story beats will be paced and packaged for viewers.

Release window, episode count, and where to watch

Season Episode count Availability
Season 1 10 episodes Exclusive streaming on HBO Max; also available on DVD and Blu-ray
Season 2 8 episodes Exclusive streaming on HBO Max; also available on DVD and Blu-ray
Season 3 Currently airing (count not specified in source) Exclusive streaming on HBO Max
Season 4 Reportedly 8 episodes Exclusive streaming on HBO Max

To put the timeline in perspective, the series began with a 10-episode Season 1. During the airing of that first run, George R. R. Martin said that it would take four complete seasons of 10 episodes each to properly cover the Dance of the Dragons “from start to finish.”

That plan didn’t hold. Starting with Season 2, episode counts were reduced to eight. Series director Clare Kilner explained in an interview that the adjustment was mainly driven by story needs—aimed at keeping momentum and sustaining a steady pace through material described as packed with “emotional and visually exciting events.”

Looking ahead, Season 4 is also reported to consist of eight episodes, which would bring the overall series total to 34 episodes.

For viewing, House of the Dragon is streamed exclusively on HBO Max. The first two seasons additionally have physical releases, with DVD and Blu-ray available for those earlier chapters.
