Yann Sommer Set for Emotional San Siro Return as Club Brugge Face Inter
Yann Sommer will return to San Siro when Club Brugge face Inter on the second matchday of the Champions League league phase, with the Swiss goalkeeper preparing to meet a club where he spent three trophy-laden seasons.
The 37-year-old is now part of a Brugge squad built around younger players, a markedly different setting from the experienced Inter group he knew in Milan. Alongside fellow senior figures Hans Vanaken and Brandon Mechele, Sommer sees his responsibility as helping provide control when matches enter decisive moments.
“It is a very young side, which makes it extremely exciting for me,” Sommer said. “It is completely different from Inter, where there was so much experience in the squad.”
He described many of Brugge’s players as talents still developing their game, adding that the club’s established leaders are seeking to give the team composure and stability under pressure.
A return to familiar surroundings
Sommer’s spell with Inter included domestic honours and a run to the Champions League final. Although that European campaign ended in disappointment, he retains enormous pride in the team’s progress through the competition.
“I am very excited to go back to Milan and play Inter,” he said. “I will see again the players I spent three years with, competing for trophies and winning them together.”
The goalkeeper expects the setting itself to make the occasion memorable, with San Siro, its crowd and the prospect of representing Brugge against his former team all adding to the significance of the fixture.
For Brugge, however, the personal element will have to give way to the wider objective in the revamped Champions League format. Sommer said the club’s priority is to advance from the league phase and secure at least a place in the next round.
He acknowledged that progress will demand near-perfect concentration against Europe’s leading sides, with little margin for costly errors, but insisted Brugge’s target is clear as they begin their latest continental challenge.
