Xavi Faces Netherlands Defensive Reshuffle for Crucial Greece Clash
The Netherlands will travel to Thessaloniki without Jan Paul van Hecke after the centre-back was ruled out by a serious foot injury suffered in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Serbia.
Head coach Xavi Hernandez must now reshape his defence for Thursday’s Group 2 meeting with leaders Greece at Toumba Stadium. Oranje are second on four points and would move above their hosts with a victory.
Quick facts
- Jan Paul van Hecke has left the Netherlands squad with a foot problem.
- The injury was sustained during the 2-1 victory over Serbia on Sunday.
- Greece lead Group 2, with the Netherlands two points behind on four.
- Toumba Stadium holds 29,000, while more than 100,000 ticket requests were submitted.
- The Netherlands finish the international window by facing Serbia in Eindhoven.
Van Hecke attempted to take part in training before the squad departed for Greece, but pain prevented him from continuing and he returned to his club.
Xavi said the defender had tried to play through the issue after taking a knock against Serbia. “He is a warrior, but it really wasn’t possible,” the coach said.
Virgil van Dijk could switch to the right side of central defence, despite usually operating on the left. Xavi has discussed that option with the Netherlands captain and said Van Dijk was prepared to move if required.
“Van Dijk can play on the right perfectly,” Xavi said. “If the team needs him there, he will be there for the team.”
Jurrien Timber is also available to start after coming off the bench against Serbia. The defender had missed the previous international camp through injury but has now been cleared following his return.
Xavi stressed that the Netherlands retain depth despite Van Hecke’s withdrawal, with 23 players available for the Greece match.
Greece arrive with recent defensive displays against Germany drawing particular attention, while Xavi also highlighted the threat they carry going forward. The hosts will have strong backing in Thessaloniki, where demand for tickets has far exceeded the capacity of the 29,000-seat ground.
The Dutch opened their Group 2 campaign with a draw against Germany before defeating Serbia. After Thursday’s trip to Greece, they will meet Serbia again in Eindhoven in their final fixture of the window.
