Viktor Gyokeres Sets Nations League Scoring Record for Sweden

Viktor Gyokeres extended his extraordinary Sweden scoring sequence in Friday’s 1-1 Nations League draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, becoming the first player to score in six consecutive appearances in the competition.

Historic goal in Bosnia

The 28-year-old Arsenal forward put Sweden ahead shortly after the hour at Bilino Polje Stadium. Bosnia and Herzegovina responded through Juventus prospect Kerim Alajbegovic, whose equaliser ensured the points were shared.

Gyokeres’ strike took him beyond every previous Nations League scoring run. His six-match sequence began with four goals against Azerbaijan in November 2024 and has continued across a series of international fixtures.

  • Azerbaijan, November 2024: four goals
  • Further Nations League goals against Estonia and Slovakia
  • Goals in recent wins over Romania and Poland
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina: the goal that set the six-game record

Arsenal role remains uncertain

Gyokeres has maintained his output for Sweden despite finding regular starts harder to secure at Arsenal this season. Summer talk suggested that Arsenal could seek another central attacking option, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez among the players linked with the Emirates Stadium club.

The Sweden international stayed in north London and is competing with Kai Havertz for the central striker role. He said speculation over his future never altered his own position.

“There was naturally plenty of speculation, but I had a full pre-season and felt good,” Gyokeres said before the Bosnia match. “My full focus was on Arsenal. For me, remaining was always the obvious decision. I am extremely happy at the club.”

He also accepted that he wants a greater share of minutes, while recognising the competition within Mikel Arteta’s squad.

“Obviously, I want to play football as much as I can and hopefully that will happen,” he said. “Every player wants to be on the pitch. You expect more minutes, of course, but this is a very strong squad with many good players and we have started well.”

Romania trip and Leeds opportunity

Sweden visit Romania in Bucharest on Monday night, giving Gyokeres an immediate chance to take his Nations League run to seven matches.

His focus will then return to Arsenal, who are due to play Leeds on October 10. Havertz is currently managing a muscle strain suffered during Germany duty, and Arteta could be cautious about using his first-choice striker for a full match.

  • Sweden face Romania in Bucharest on Monday night.
  • Arsenal’s next listed fixture is against Leeds on October 10.
  • Havertz’s muscle problem could create an opening for Gyokeres in Arteta’s starting side.

Gyokeres’ record-setting international form offers Arsenal a striker in rhythm should that opportunity arrive.
