The Friedkin Group explores sale of controlling stake in Everton
Everton’s ownership picture has been thrown back into focus after The Friedkin Group opened the door to selling a controlling stake, less than two years after completing its takeover from Farhad Moshiri in December 2024.
The American group has appointed Moelis & Company to advise on the process as it seeks new investment. TFG says it will consider only parties it regards as appropriate long-term custodians and will continue funding and supporting the club during the search.
Quick facts
- The Friedkin Group took control of Everton in December 2024.
- Everton are seventh in the Premier League after five matches this season.
- David Moyes learned of the planned sale process on the morning it was announced.
- Moelis & Company has been retained to advise TFG.
- TFG also owns AS Roma in Italy and AS Cannes in France.
The development comes after TFG oversaw Everton’s move into the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, a major landmark following years of financial pressure and instability away from the pitch. The group said the club had faced serious uncertainty when it assumed ownership, but believes a more secure platform has now been established.
In its statement, TFG said it had helped put the necessary foundations in place and considered this the appropriate moment to examine Everton’s next stage. The prospective transaction is intended to bring in an investor capable of building on that work rather than prompt an immediate exit from day-to-day responsibilities.
Moyes admitted the news had come as a surprise while speaking before Everton’s forthcoming match against Hull City. The manager said he had returned with the aim of restoring Everton as regular contenders for European qualification, but described the summer as difficult.
The Scot said he had assumed the new owners were fully committed to that project, having only been informed of their intention on the day of the announcement. While he acknowledged some surprise, Moyes added that he could not say the decision was entirely unexpected.
Everton’s strong early league position has not prevented fresh uncertainty around the club’s direction. TFG has nevertheless pledged to remain fully engaged on football and operational matters until any deal for a controlling holding is completed.
