Simeone Warns Atletico Madrid Over Manchester United’s Champions League Threat

Diego Simeone has warned Atletico Madrid not to judge Manchester United solely by their early Premier League results as the clubs prepare to meet in the Champions League.

United have taken six points from six league matches and are without a domestic win in four, following a 1-1 draw with a Tottenham team reduced to 10 men at Old Trafford. The run has increased scrutiny on Michael Carrick, but Atletico’s head coach sees a side whose threat remains clear.

Quick facts

  • Manchester United have collected six points from their first six Premier League fixtures.
  • Their 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham made it four league games without a win.
  • United began their European campaign with a 4-0 win over Sabah.
  • Atletico are second in LaLiga on 19 points after eight rounds, five behind Barcelona.
  • Julian Alvarez has one assist and no goals from five appearances in 2026-27.

Simeone said United press aggressively high up the pitch and have quick players capable of causing problems. He believes their recent draws have not removed the attacking danger they displayed last season.

“They close spaces quickly in your half and have pace,” Simeone said. “Their results have included many draws, but they are still producing the danger they created last year. They are a strong team.”

United finished third in the Premier League last season after Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim midway through the 2025-26 campaign. Carrick’s adjustments helped return the club to the Champions League, although their domestic momentum has not carried into the new term.

Defender David Hancko also stressed the scale of the task facing Atletico. He pointed to United’s previous Premier League finish and said the visitors possess enough quality to demand a full-intensity performance from the Spanish side.

“They had an excellent season in the best league in the world,” Hancko said. “They have not started well, but there are many positives and great players. Manchester United are unquestionably a giant, and we must be at 100 per cent to beat them.”

Alvarez seeking a lift

Atletico arrive in stronger domestic condition, having won four straight LaLiga games against Real Sociedad, Osasuna, Real Madrid and Alaves. That sequence has taken them to 19 points, although Barcelona have opened the season with a perfect record and hold a five-point advantage after eight matches.

Simeone’s squad still has a major question around Julian Alvarez. The Argentina forward has had an injury-affected start to 2026-27 and has also been the subject of continued speculation over a possible summer departure.

Alvarez has played five times in all competitions without scoring. His only direct contribution was an assist in Atletico’s opening Champions League match, a 2-1 loss to Liverpool.

Simeone said on Monday that Alvarez brings more than finishing, highlighting his ability to combine with team-mates. The coach praised the striker’s second-half display against Alaves and said he hopes the forward can build towards the level expected of him.

“Players with Julian’s profile need goals, but that applies to all forwards,” Simeone said. “He connects well with others and offers much more than scoring. He was very good after the interval against Alaves, and we hope he continues improving.”
