Scholes and Butt Question Manchester United’s Recruitment After Poor Start
Manchester United’s poor start has prompted sharp criticism from Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt, with both former players questioning the club’s recruitment, squad balance and prospects of meeting its stated title ambitions. United have taken only one win from their first five Premier League matches and have already exited the Carabao Cup.
A difficult opening to the campaign

Scholes questions transfer direction
Scholes believes United’s transfer policy no longer reflects a club building to challenge for the Premier League title. He said the current approach was sad to watch and argued that the recruitment had not been aimed at winning the league.
Casemiro left for Inter Miami, while United failed to secure moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. The club also chose not to meet the valuations placed on Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
Instead, United spent £70 million on Carlos Baleba, £48 million on Andrey Santos and £35 million on Youri Tielemans. Scholes accepted that Santos and Baleba may offer greater physical qualities, but questioned whether the additions have improved the side sufficiently.
He highlighted Santos’s limited Chelsea record, noting that the midfielder made 11 appearances for the club before United paid around £50 million, and said the player was not currently forcing his way into the team. Scholes’s assessment was that United remain “a million miles away” from where they need to be.
Butt raises concerns over balance and attacking roles
Butt identified the left side of defence as another unresolved issue, arguing that United have not brought in suitable competition or cover for 31-year-old Luke Shaw.
He also criticised the use of Matheus Cunha through the middle, saying the forward is being diminished by playing as a number nine. Butt added that Joshua Zirkzee has not shown enough to look like a Manchester United centre-forward.
The former United midfielder also challenged the likelihood of chief executive Omar Berrada’s target of winning the league by 2028. Butt said that goal would not be achieved if the club continued on its current course.
Carrick faces a pivotal run
Carrick must now find results quickly with the group available to him. INEOS has dismissed two managers since taking control in February 2024, leaving little room for another prolonged downturn.
With the January transfer window still some distance away, United’s forthcoming fixtures carry added importance. Carrick’s immediate task is to establish a winning formula before the season falls further away from the club’s expectations.
