Schick Extends Bundesliga Scoring Run as Leverkusen Beat Leipzig
Patrik Schick admitted Bayer Leverkusen’s international break arrives at an awkward point after his opening goal helped secure a 2-0 Bundesliga victory over Leipzig at the BayArena. The Czech striker has scored in each of the first four league rounds, while Miguel Gutierrez added the second after half-time as Carles Martinez Novell’s side moved into fifth place.

Schick’s volley opened the scoring against Leipzig and continued a run that has put him alongside Stefan Kiessling’s club mark from the 2009-10 season for scoring across the opening four matchdays.
The forward believes Leverkusen could have gained even more from the start of the campaign without the upcoming three-week interruption to domestic football.
“I could have scored two or three more goals,” Schick said. “But overall, we did a really great job. Unfortunately, the international break is coming now.”
Gutiérrez’s second-half finish made sure of the points, while Leverkusen protected their lead without allowing Leipzig’s attack a route back into the contest. The result also continued an encouraging scoring record: Martinez Novell’s team have registered at least two goals in all six of their competitive fixtures so far.
Competition context
Leverkusen’s clean sheet was notable as well as the result. Martinez Novell has now overseen shutouts in each of his first three competitive home games, equalling a club benchmark established by Rudi Voller in 2000.
Goalkeeper Mark Flekken highlighted the work done without the ball, with Leverkusen controlling Leipzig through their pressing and organisation.
“Defensively, we did what we wanted to do,” Flekken said. “The counter-press was good, we won useful fouls and we were very strong at the back. Everything came together.”
