Real Madrid Eye Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool Contract Talks Stall
Virgil van Dijk has entered the final year of his Liverpool contract without discussions over a further extension having begun, leaving Real Madrid as the leading reported contender for the Netherlands captain should he become available next summer.
Contract situation and Madrid interest
- Van Dijk signed a two-year Liverpool extension in April 2025, placing the 35-year-old in the last season of that agreement.
- After Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth on September 20, the defender said the club had not opened negotiations over a new deal.
- He is understood to be relaxed about his position on Merseyside, but the absence of progress has prompted speculation over a possible move to Spain at the end of the season.
- Real Madrid are reported to view Van Dijk as a leading option for their defence, with the prospect of a free transfer fitting a recruitment approach centred on elite players nearing the end of their contracts.
- Madrid president Florentino Perez is said to favour another deal similar to the one that brought Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool without a transfer fee. Konate has already adapted to Spanish football, and a reunion with Van Dijk is viewed as a potential immediate improvement at the back.
Barcelona, by contrast, have reportedly reduced their interest. Hansi Flick is said to have reservations about signing a defender who would be 36 next summer, believing the move could limit opportunities for younger La Masia graduates.
Heskey’s concern over a free departure
Former Liverpool forward Emile Heskey believes Madrid’s standing means their approach could unsettle even a player who remains under contract. He argued that the possibility of another major Liverpool figure leaving for nothing would be difficult for the club and its supporters to accept.
Heskey stressed that Van Dijk still carries considerable value despite his age and said the defender’s standing at Anfield must form part of his decision. Van Dijk has spent close to a decade at the centre of Liverpool’s defence and remains the club captain.
Szoboszlai tipped for captaincy
Heskey also identified vice-captain Dominik Szoboszlai as the player most suited to succeed Van Dijk with the armband. He urged Liverpool to make securing the Hungary international’s longer-term future a priority.
In Heskey’s view, Szoboszlai has shown the authority and personality required of a future captain. He added that retaining a player of Szoboszlai’s quality and leadership could also help Liverpool attract other leading players, making his continued presence vital to the club’s plans.
