Real Madrid Back Mourinho Over Villarreal Press Conference Boycott
Real Madrid have backed José Mourinho’s decision not to address the media after the 1-0 win over Villarreal, with the manager determined to avoid a touchline ban before a demanding run of fixtures against Sevilla, Barcelona and Roma.
Mourinho declined his usual post-match press conference after a contest marked by disputed officiating calls. He was concerned that a public reaction to the decisions could result in disciplinary action, particularly after he had already criticised referees heavily following the recent loss to Atlético Madrid.
The Madrid coach made clear after the final whistle that protecting his presence on the bench was his priority. He told those around him that he would not speak because he wanted to be available for the matches against Sevilla and Barcelona.
Yan Diomande’s second-half strike delivered the points against Villarreal, but the result came amid further controversy for Vinicius. The Brazilian was sent off after an incident involving Nathan Saliba, while a goal scored by Vinicius was later ruled out following a VAR review.
Selection questions remain despite victory
The narrow success did little to hide issues Mourinho must resolve quickly. Real Madrid again found it difficult to move the ball effectively through midfield and were unable to create a consistent supply of clear opportunities, leaving the manager with familiar concerns over the side’s attacking structure.
Vinicius could now be suspended for El Clásico, which would add to Mourinho’s selection problems. The coach must consider how Diomande fits into his preferred starting side and whether Arda Güler can take on a more central creative responsibility as Madrid seek greater control in possession.
Madrid’s immediate attention turns to the Champions League, with Roma next on the schedule. Mourinho is due to face the media on Tuesday before that important European tie, ahead of the domestic meetings with Sevilla and Barcelona later this month.
