Raphinha Appeals for Protection as Barcelona Beat Sevilla

Barcelona extended their La Liga winning run to seven matches with a vital result against Sevilla, although the contest was marked as much by its physical edge as by the points at stake. Captain Raphinha repeatedly appealed to referee José Martínez Munuera during the game, arguing that Sevilla’s marking and holding were putting Barcelona players at risk.

Raphinha raises concerns with referee

1. Raphinha approached Martínez Munuera on several occasions as Barcelona faced an increasingly combative Sevilla defence.
2. The Brazil forward urged the official to act against screens, grabs and other holding in the area, warning that the challenges were becoming dangerous. He told the referee that players could have their backs broken and suggested that calling one or two fouls would deter further incidents.
3. The dispute reached a flashpoint at a Barcelona free-kick, when Raphinha became involved in a physical confrontation with Sevilla midfielder Youssuf Fofana.
4. Martínez Munuera intervened quickly and rebuked both players, telling them that each had been holding the other and comparing the exchange to judo rather than football.

The episode underlined Raphinha’s increasingly prominent role within Hansi Flick’s side. The 29-year-old is Barcelona’s first captain and has played more minutes than any other outfield player this season, combining his output in attack with a more vocal responsibility on the pitch.

Form and international demand

Raphinha has also been central to Barcelona’s attacking momentum. Alongside Lamine Yamal and Fermín López, he has helped form a highly productive front line, with the Brazilian scoring 14 goals across eight appearances. That return has put him ahead of the level he reached in his first season at the club.

Barcelona now enter the international break with seven successive league victories behind them, but Flick will have concerns over the workload awaiting his captain. Raphinha is due to make a 34,000-kilometre return journey to Australia for Brazil friendlies, leaving Barcelona hopeful that he returns fit and ready for the next stage of their domestic campaign.
