PSG Rest Dembélé and Mendes for Ligue 1 Clash with Le Mans
Paris Saint-Germain will be without Ousmane Dembélé and Nuno Mendes for Saturday’s Ligue 1 match against Le Mans after granting both players a short recovery period following international duty.
Why the decision matters for PSG
| Player | International workload | Scheduled return to training | Next expected European fixture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ousmane Dembélé | Four appearances for France | Saturday, October 10 | Manchester City away, Wednesday |
| Nuno Mendes | Four Portugal starts in 10 days | Sunday, October 11 | Manchester City away, Wednesday |
The arrangement was agreed by Luis Enrique, the sporting director and the club’s hierarchy, with PSG seeking to limit the physical strain on two players who have been heavily used by their national teams. Dembélé and Mendes will miss the home fixture at Parc des Princes but are due back in training shortly afterwards.
Dembélé played in each of France’s four recent internationals. His workload has drawn particular attention given his previous muscular problems, and PSG had already taken a cautious approach earlier in the campaign when he did not travel for the August league game at Lille.
Mendes has also had an intense spell, starting four successive matches for Portugal across a 10-day period. The 24-year-old left-back is a major attacking outlet for PSG through his forward runs from the flank, but the club are managing his minutes amid a season with an enlarged European schedule.
The immediate objective is to have both players available for PSG’s Champions League matchday two visit to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday. Dembélé’s ability to beat opponents in isolated situations and Mendes’ overlapping threat would offer Enrique important options against the Premier League side.
The Le Mans match gives PSG an opportunity to use the depth of the squad. With two established starters unavailable, players on the edge of the regular side can press their case as Enrique looks to rotate before the trip to England. PSG will aim to take three league points at home while protecting key internationals for the demanding fixtures ahead.
