The former United and Sunderland defender said the back four may not be among the division’s strongest on paper, but insisted the group must become more aggressive, communicate better and hold teammates responsible for errors, missed crosses and unblocked shots. In his view, the squad lacks leadership during difficult moments.

Fernandes has become a focus of scrutiny amid the wider poor start. The 32-year-old has three Premier League goals and one assist, but every one of those contributions came in the Ipswich win.

Bardsley, who came through United’s academy, described Fernandes as looking flat compared with the player who has been central to the club over the previous four or five seasons. He stressed that Fernandes’ commitment and off-ball work should not be questioned, while warning that United rely heavily on his influence.
