Omar Marmoush scores first Tottenham goal in Coventry win
Tottenham ended a seven-match wait for a victory with a 3-1 home win over newly promoted Coventry, climbing from the foot of the table to 16th as Omar Marmoush scored his first goal for the club.
Tottenham find a result after difficult run
The win followed three draws and three defeats for Tottenham, despite performances that Marmoush felt had been stronger than the results suggested. A four-day warm-weather camp in Marbella preceded the match, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side made an assertive start against Frank Lampard’s Coventry.
James Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing Mohammed Kudus’ delivery against the club he supported as a boy. Tottenham also saw a Dominic Solanke effort disallowed and had largely controlled the contest before Coventry found a route back into it after half-time.
- Tottenham moved from 20th place to 16th with the win.
- Marmoush was on loan from Manchester City when he joined the Lilywhites.
- Dejan Kulusevski returned from a serious knee injury which had kept him out throughout the previous campaign.
- Coventry fell to 17th and next host Fulham and Sunderland in successive matches.
Rudoni equalises before Marmoush responds
Coventry had threatened early on, but Tottenham’s defence dealt with those initial attacks. The visitors’ equaliser came after the interval, when Jan Paul van Hecke surrendered possession and Jack Rudoni capitalised to bring the score level.
Marmoush restored Tottenham’s advantage in the 58th minute, although the goal came after an incident in which he caught Milan van Ewijk in the face. Ben Davies then made the result safe in stoppage time, his late finish settling a contest that had become more tense after Rudoni’s leveller.
Marmoush said the squad were delighted to finally turn recent displays into a win, stressing that the three points mattered more to him than his personal milestone. He described the result as a platform for improvement after a frustrating opening sequence.
Marmoush backs De Zerbi’s work
The forward said Tottenham had continued to learn with every fixture and believed their earlier performances had merited more. He also credited Coventry as a dangerous side in transition and said Davies’ stoppage-time goal helped calm the closing stages.
Marmoush praised De Zerbi’s influence, highlighting the coach’s attention to individual details as well as his intensity and passion. He said the players trusted the system and viewed the group as a united side prepared to fight for one another through the season.
Fresh injury concerns after first win
The result came with potential fitness problems for Tottenham. Defenders Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo both suffered new knocks and will require assessment, while Marmoush limped off late in the match after scoring the decisive second goal.
Kulusevski’s return nevertheless provided a significant positive on a night when Tottenham combined their first league victory of the campaign with a much-needed rise away from the bottom of the standings.
