Mbappe Stars as Real Madrid Hit Four to Draw Level with Barcelona
Real Madrid answered their recent La Liga setback against Real Betis with a 4-1 home win over Rayo Vallecano, drawing level with Barcelona on 12 points after five rounds. Kylian Mbappe scored twice and created another goal at the Bernabeu, where Jude Bellingham and Carreras also found the net.
The result followed Madrid’s midweek European victory against Inter Milan, but there had still been concern over the side’s attacking cohesion and finishing after the defeat to Betis. Those concerns were eased by a sharp first-half display in which Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Bellingham combined effectively around the Rayo penalty area.
Mbappe drives Madrid’s first-half surge
Mbappe was central to Madrid’s early control. After putting the hosts ahead, the France forward turned creator within three minutes, finding space before playing Carreras through against the Rayo defence. Carreras converted to establish a two-goal advantage.
Madrid continued to press their superiority and added a third goal in the 35th minute. Vinicius delivered a low ball into the area and Bellingham arrived to finish, giving Jose Mourinho’s side a commanding interval lead.
Rayo response tests the hosts
The match changed after the break as Madrid’s intensity fell away. Rayo pushed further forward and took advantage of a defensive error in the 51st minute, when Camello punished a lapse involving Antonio Rüdiger.
That goal gave the visitors encouragement and they began to compete more strongly through midfield, forcing Madrid into a more defensive spell. Thibaut Courtois made several important saves and interventions as Rayo pursued a second goal that would have placed the home side under greater pressure.
Madrid eventually ended the contest in stoppage time. With Rayo committed to attack, Mbappe broke into the space left behind, timed his run to collect the pass and finished from a tight angle into the far corner in the 91st minute.
Early title race takes shape
The four-goal display also improves Madrid’s goal difference as they restore parity with Barcelona at the top of the table. The second-half drop-off will remain an issue for the coaching staff, but the attacking connection between Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham offered an encouraging response after the Betis defeat.
For Rayo Vallecano, the second-half performance provided some merit despite the final margin. They exposed moments of uncertainty in Madrid’s defence, though they could not match the individual quality that decided the game, particularly Mbappe’s contribution at both ends of the scoring sequence.
