Marquinhos: India Friendly Can Spark Brazil’s Post-World Cup Reset
Brazil captain Marquinhos believes Saturday’s friendly with India at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium can help the Seleção turn the page after their 2026 World Cup last-16 elimination, with the Paris Saint-Germain defender urging his side to draw energy from the reception awaiting them.

The match will be Brazil’s third since the World Cup and their final fixture of the current international window. Carlo Ancelotti’s squad followed their tournament disappointment with a draw and a win against Australia, and Marquinhos sees the trip as useful preparation for the next phase of the national team’s development.
The 32-year-old said the support Brazil have encountered in India has been felt both around the training base and at the stadium. He believes that welcome matters not only to established internationals but also to players still finding their place in the group.
“Coming to a country such as India gives us a very good chance to play well and win,” Marquinhos said. “For players who have been with Brazil for a long time, and for those arriving in the squad, this kind of welcome is important. It gives the group the drive to respond well and keep Brazil among the leading teams after the World Cup.”
Marquinhos described India as one of the strongest overseas markets for Brazilian football, saying the scale of local support had made the visit particularly meaningful for the players.
Brazil have also prepared carefully for an India team that has played six matches this year. Marquinhos stressed that results alone do not tell the full story of those games, noting that each fixture had offered different moments and challenges despite India not recording a win.
He singled out Gurpreet’s impending 90th cap as a significant achievement and rejected any suggestion that Brazil should offer guidance to their hosts. Marquinhos said India’s players were already highly professional and that both squads would approach the occasion with the same ambition.
“We have studied India closely because we want the best possible outcome,” he said. “Their goalkeeper reaching 90 matches for his country is an outstanding mark. They do not need advice from us; they are professionals. India and Brazil share the same dream and the same mentality.”
The Brazil captain expects a demanding atmosphere in Kolkata but wants his teammates to use expectations around the fixture constructively. “The pressure must become motivation,” he said. “With the affection and warmth we have received, we need to make that an extra force in our performance.”
Brazil will next assemble in November, when they head to Kallang in Singapore for friendlies against Japan and Singapore. India, meanwhile, remain in Kolkata to face another South American opponent, with Uruguay due at the same stadium on October 6.
